A Photo Finish

by - Tuesday, February 05, 2008

Kim over at Four Beds Two Baths is having a design dilemma. She's trying to figure out how to finish off her dining room design. It got me to thinking that my dining room needs that finishing touch too. I know that there is a lot of pattern in the room, and once the drapes are up the room will have some softness... but the long expanse of wall still screams for some sort of art or decor.

HandyMan and I stayed at the amazing Hotel 1898 in Barcelona on our honeymoon. This beautiful hotel, once home to the Philippine Tobacco Company, features a modern masculine decor with rustic photographs alluding to its Philippine heritage. Ever since our visit, I've wanted to replicate the look using photos I took on our trip to Asia.

So using this look as inspiration + a little Powerpoint magic, here's some ideas I've come up with for our dining room:

I'm liking the different textures in the first photo, and definitely like the look of three prints instead of two. Sepia also seems to work better in the room than black and white. I wish I had a real long horizontal photo like in the inspiration pic - but then, with the wainscotting, the room is looking pretty horizontal as it is and I may not want to emphasize it more. All in all though, I'm not entirely sure this photo concept works in this room. I'll have to mull it over a bit more. What do you think?

  1. I definately like the scale of the first grouping best, with 3 photos of differing textures. I think the sepia does work better, but I think they need to be framed somehow to look more finished. Unframed makes more sense when all 3 images are of one larger image split, but I think with separate images framed is best. Just my two cents :)

  2. I think you're right Dale. Frames would give the photos more polish. I'll have to mock that up too ;)

  3. I think that the photo concept does not really work for your dining room...but I do love your dining room A LOT.
