iWanna give you an iTouch!

by - Thursday, October 15, 2009

If you know me, you know I like gadgets. When I'm cooking in the kitchen, I love to pop the iPod into the Griffin speaker system, play some background music while I'm looking up recipes on my Mac, all the while watching Chloe TV (we have the infant monitor hooked up to our flatscreen). I love to multi-task multi techs :) So when DuPont and Ogilvy PR asked me to check out their new mySurface app on the iTouch they sent me, I was giddy as a schoolgirl.

mySurface is a free application that you can download through iTunes and load onto your device. Think of it like a paint deck but for counter surfaces. Handy, no? It contains a gallery of Corian and Zodiaq surfaces which you can view by easily scrolling through the colour bar. You can even zoom in on the pics to see the textures that more clearly, and save them to your Favourites too.

We totally could have used this app last year when we were searching for counters for our kitchen remodel.
And if we had the room, we may have considered a custom Corian counter for our bathroom remodel too. It would have been easy to whip out the app while we were in the store looking at tiles or fixtures to see what surfaces could work.

Could you use an app like this? Bet you could - and you're in luck because DuPont has given me one iTouch to giveaway to a lucky reader! Now you can download mySurface and have it handy for your own projects. Here's how to win:

  1. Leave a comment here and tell me your favourite DIY or decorating related app. Don't have one? Make one up! For me, I would love an app that could create room layout plans if I input room and furniture measurements!
  2. To get an extra entry, use the links on the left to follow us on Twitter, subscribe to the blog, or add us to your reader. And leave a comment here letting me know you did!
  3. Prize must be shipped to a U.S mailing address.*
  4. Contest closes Tuesday, October 20th, 10pm EST. Winner will be randomly selected and announced on October 21st.
Good luck!

*Canadian readers, unfortunately one of the stipulations from DuPont who kindly sponsored the giveaway was that the prize ship within the US :( But if you have an American relative that could enter on your behalf, please do!

  1. I'm not sure if there's an app already, but I would love one that would give me that exact amount of paint I would need for a project. It always seems to be a gamble for me.

    Love your idea, too!

What? A US mailing address? Are you leaving your Cdn readers in the dust?

  5. ok, if i could have an app that could give me ideas of how to arrange bookshelves using what i've got, that would be totally amazing.

    and of course I'm a subscriber! :)

  6. Oooo I'd loveeee an iTouch! I love decor apps, like ones that recognize paint colours or help you calculate amounts when you're shopping. I'd also be interested in an app that helps you find complementary colour schemes. Fun!

  7. I subscribe in a reader and I'm also adding you to Twitter! :) Thanks for the giveaway!

  8. I dont have an ipod or an itouch so I dont know what kind of apps there are but I would totally love to see one that finds items that match your decor. Like my bedroom is green and blue (think spring colors) with a little bit of gray to balance it out and my bathroom is a tangerine color. I'd love to have an app that helps me tie it all together with affordable items. Does that make sense?

Or if we could have an app that gives us our own personalized David Bromstad that would be ideal =]

  9. what a great giveaway!

it might exist already - but a great app would be one where you could stand in the corner of a room, and the app would measure the distance of the walls in the room. i hate tape measures!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'd like an app that would act as a paint chip. Or make palettes from one color (like from a picture).

(FYI - I'm also subscribed to the blog in Google Reader.)

    ReplyDelete
  11. already following you in reader, but now on twitter too! (i love your design there!)

    ReplyDelete
  12. So I am now following you on Twitter, my google reader AND the blog lol Does that count for 3 entries? jk

  14. I have such a hard time with furniture arrangement and hate the current programs that are out there on the internet. I would love an easy to use app that I could plan out the rooms in my house that is being built with. Of course I don't have an ipod so I guess I need one of those before finding the app. :) I am currently a subscriber!

  15. I'd love an app that would let me take a picture of a room, tell it what I want to do to it, and then have it talk me out of it. Then I could just sit there and play with it all day (the iTouch that is...).

And I just came here from Google Reader where I am subscribed to your blog :)

  16. I NEED! I would like an app where you can take a photo of an object and it busts it out into a color palette for you and gives you coordinating paint names and mixes (preferably Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams).

    ReplyDelete
  17. I would love a detailed color wheel app so I could look at color ideas when I'm trying to think of a color palette in design work.

  19. WOW. What a fun giveaway. I'm totally in. And I have a US mailing address so I'm definitely partipating!

I don't have an iTouch, or any fun gadget like that, so my concept of applicatons is pretty limited, so the room layout application like you suggested sounds fantastic. I wish I were more creative with that, but without having one, I don't know whats possible!

I follow you on Twitter, and you're on my blog rool. ;)

I hope that's enough for my entry!

  20. Oooh sweet! I don't have any fancy gadgets, so I don't know what is available.

I would love one that would let you make a home floor plan/carry dimensions, so when I am out shopping it is always handy!

    ReplyDelete
  21. AWESOME!!! I need this iTouch and app for my new house and future remodel projects!

I'm sure an app like this already exists, but I'd love one that could give you great decorating color combos. Like I want a yellow wall - and if I could just pick my color of yellow I'm wanting and the app could show me other colors to use in that room!

I'm a subscriber to your blog via Google Reader! :) Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh dangit, I also added y'all to my reader!

  23. I would like to make up an Ikea Dictionary app. What is Ektorp anyway?

I just signed up to fpllow your blog twitter also.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think the level and the 'where to put your nails' apps are really cool. I would love one that keeps track of what home improvement supplies I have so I stop buying duplicates of everything. I really don't need 3 things of wood glue!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would love love LOVE to win this! I too am a huge tech junkie and it has been killing me that I'm not able to buy an iPod touch. I have the best idea for an app (if it isn't already one) and that is for arranging a room. It would be awesome if you could enter in the dimensions of your room and "drop" in furniture of the correct dimensions. I never have the patience to plan and cut out "furniture" to arrange so this would help me a TON!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I also follow your blog on google reader!

  27. I'm not super familiar with apps, but love the leveler one my friend uses for hanging pictures!

I need something that would calculate the proper amount of tile/carpet/flooring to buy.
For some reason I always end up with at least 3 boxes left over. And I know how to multiply! (I think)

    ReplyDelete
  30. My dream app would price compare my diy tools for me- so I would know where to buy the painter's tape, tile, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My favorite app would be a level, so that all of my photos and art would be hung on the walls evenly! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I follow you in Google Reader and just added you to Twitter (@eedawson). I love the paint-picking app & the level. It would be awesome for hanging photos!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have an app where you snap a photo and it will generate a paint palette. There are also ones I use when bargain-shopping for decor to see how great of deal the item is. And while not DIY-specific, I check out YouTube a lot for how-to videos.

(By the way, we have a running joke in our office about calling it an iTouch instead of an iPod Touch...it inevitably sounds funny.

Hmm, I like your idea about an app that would take in my room and furniture measurements and then let me create room plan ideas, but what I really need is an app that would take in that information and then tell me what I've done wrong and how to fix it! Thanks for such a fun giveaway. (And I'm already a subscriber in Bloglines!)

  38. There may already be something like this (don't have an iTouch yet!), but I'd love to have an app that would allow me to scan a color and then match that to a brand's mix. I always see colors I love but don't have paint chips handy to match.

I subscribed to your blog on Google Reader last week after I discovered you through Hooked on Houses. Now I'm hooked on both blogs! :) Keep up the great work!

    ReplyDelete
  52. hmm, an app to compare and organize all your contractors quotes with access to photos of their renos, but that might be a bit of a privacy concern.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm already a subscriber to your blog though google reader, does that count for a 2nd entry? Great contest, and love your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I recently read about a DIY toolbox which converts area/volume/metric-imperial conversions, etcetera.

Which would totally be helpful when calculating the amount of carpet/paint/flooring you need for a project.

I don't have an Iphone (but I'm hopeful!) so I have no idea whether this is a new idea or not.

Ps. I have a shipping address in the US, & I subscribe via reader as well.

    Thanks for the contest!

  58. This makes me giddy! As you know {I think} I used Corian's new counters on my new kitchen countertops! I love them!

If I could make up an app, b/c I don't have an iphone or touch...it would be where you could enter an item you loved while shopping and the app would find less spendier similar options!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oooh, p.s.! I'm a follower too!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think it'd get a lot of use out of any kind of paint color app and that leveling one too. The new Corian one would be awesome for me soon-to-be kitchen redo!

Just started subscribing in Reader a few days ago and loving your blog! Gonna follow you on Twitter too!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't have an Ipod touch but a cool app would be a photo frame arranger, plug in the dimensions of the different frames and it would spit out different layouts for your wall.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm a subscriber and a follower!! LOVE your blog :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. I would love an app that gives paint color combinations. For example, I pick a wall color and it suggests colors that would be good accents for curtains or pillows or artwork, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think an app that let me put in my decor style and house dimensions and then virtually decorated my house would be awesome!

  69. I saw somewhere there was a level app. I'd love that one with all the rearranging of picture frames I do. :)

    Good morning!

The app I would like is the level (one less thing to look for when putting up pictures!), but would like one that delivers paint colour options from different paint manufacturers.

I am a regular reader and now signed up on Twitter.

    thanks! Mike

  75. I would love it i could take a picture of an item and the app would spit out an image of how it would like in my room. and if it could also calculate the quantity and the cost as well!

    ReplyDelete
  76. It would be nice if you could input lengths for your basic floor plan, superimpose doorways and windows, specify 2-dimensional measurements for owned/desired furniture, then drag-and-drop furniture to see what it'd look like in-place.

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favorite app would be one that tells me exactly where to place everything in the room. :) Maybe myDecorator. ;)

  78. I signed up as a follower on Google Reader!

  79. Wow! I thought I'd be the only one entering that isn't familiar with apps since I don't have a similar gadget either. Thanks for making me feel at home, everyone!

I think the ideas about taking a pic of an item and having a color pallete and coordinating suggestions provided and taking a pic of a room and dropping in other items to preview are both ingenious...especially for those indecisive folks like myself!

    amy_lou_7@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  80. Great giveaway! I love the level app. An app that I would like to exist or I haven't discovered yet is... taking a pic of a pricey piece and the app would find similar pieces that are more affordable.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think I need an electronic designer. I want to be able to put in a paint color and any other items I plan to have in a room, along with a max $, and have the app tell me what accessories are available. :) I love and hate doing that part.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Fun! I don't have an ipod touch/iphone. My favorite app would be one that tells you a similar paint color if you take a picture of something - I think there might already be an app that does that? Anyway, that would be awesome! I already follow you on Google, but I now follow you on Twitter as well.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Anonymous6:05 PM

Wow - now that's a fantastic giveaway. I think an interesting app (no idea if there already is one) would be to match paint for you and then suggest trim/accent colours that would also work.

Couldn't resist this one and I really enjoy your blog...I would love an app that if you take a picture of your furniture and accessories in a room that it would design the perfect layout and suggest other pieces and tell you what your design style is.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Oh pick me! I so need one of these!
How about an application that allows me to take a picture of all my pieces of furniture, and then provides a room layout using these pieces? I'd go for that!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I would also love a layout app for furniture. That's the hardest part of design for me.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I am dying for an itouch...I currently don't have one so not sure of all the apps. I would love a price comparison app. Where you could choose store you normally shop at and they would spit out current prices and then give you suggestions of where you could find it cheaper!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I would love an app that would take accurate pictures of all your stuff at home, and turn them into Pantone color swatches, so when you're out on the town and see an awesome rug on sale, you can see if it really does match your couch.

    ReplyDelete
  89. And hey, I've subscribed to your feed on my Bloglines!

    ReplyDelete
  90. great!!in my opinion, i think if MySurface would add in some features e.g. can access online to search for the price range, it would be much better. At least the consumer can make a budget out of it.

  94. this is great giveaway!! didn't win in RemodelingGuy,Hooked in houses, and livinglocurto...hope i can win this =p

    ReplyDelete
  95. oh...about my idea, i would think that if you can snap a photo (i know that iTouch can't do that but maybe in iPhone) and MySurface can simply just search through the database for the match, then it would be much perfect!! Then we won't have to do this manually browsing through all for the match.

    ReplyDelete
  96. btw, i have subsribed

    ReplyDelete
  97. my idea about the apps would be:

MySurface can have an extra feature with metric-imperial conversions,or something like that
This would totally be helpful when doing a project like you can use it to check the amount of flooring, calculating the paint and so on. MySurface should have features not just limited with the current one.

    ReplyDelete
  98. i don't have an iPhone, not even an iTouch. I would love to have one in this giveaway. I have tons more idea about how MySurface can expand and develop. If i would be so lucky to win this giveaway, i will definitely do an apps review about this apps and promote it to let more people know about this great app.

    ReplyDelete
  99. i know this gain me no extra entry for winning this giveaway but i have made a youtube video to promote this giveaway!!

    cheers~thanx for the contest!!

  100. The app that you described sounds good to me! Also, one that calculates yardage for upholstery projects. I also subscribe to your blog!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I would love an easy photoshop-like program where you can change the color of anything in a picture. for example, if i want to paint an existing oak cabinet white i could see it against existing decor. also, it'd be useful for wall colors as well. maybe a brand of paint can even sponsor it and use their selection of colors.

  104. I'd love an app that would automatically put home maintenance tasks on your calendar based on the weather or the season. For example: The temp is dropping in Boston- it would tell you to get the furnace serviced and close all the storm windows.

    ReplyDelete
  105. My idea would be...if MySurface can have some function like drawing outline to an object then we can literally change the colour or contour according to the database in MySurface, then it would be perfect!! Because like that it would be more practical when doing some project. We can see how it suits to the idea instead of imagining it =p

I would love an app that would let me store info about each of the rooms in my homes, maybe storing photos of paint chips and swatches of fabric. Would be fantastic if it would let you build a wish list of items you are looking for as well. I'm always prowling antique markets for items that resemble pieces seen in magazine pics that I like. --SusanR

  137. I would really, really want a paint chip app...so I could just hold up the touch and pick a color! Oh wait...I would have to have an iTouch first :)

  138. I would like an app that is the true color of the paint and one that you could take a picture of your room/wall and then add the color and it be exactly what it would look like in your own room
