I'm No Stylist

Do you ever come across a photo of a bookcase styled so perfectly, with every object existing in perfect harmony with all others that you wonder 'how did they do that'? I do, often. Styling objects and creating beautiful vignettes doesn't come easy to me. I'm not a good collector, I'm too impulsive to accumulate a nice collection of depression glassware or ceramic animals or vintage plates so my accessories drawer is filled with ones and twos of things - things that don't go with other things.

I had to give it a go though and create a vignette atop the dresser in the master bedroom. (Yes, the bedroom that we started redecorating months ago. Its almost done and I'll reveal soon). So I walked about the house and gathered bits and bobs, pieces and props. And this is what I came up with:

Looks like a simple arrangement, right? Yeah, it took me a few tries to get it looking like that.

11 different iterations and I'm still not sure any of them look any good. But I ended up settling on one anyway. At least that part of the room is done :)

  3. You did a great job with this. I can't accessorize well at all with our bookshelves and it pains me to look at them some days. good idea about the photos.
BTW, I am new to your blog and really enjoy it.

  4. First off, I think your Blog is *well* styled!

Secondly, of your "choices", you did pick the better one.

However, thirdly, may I give you a few additional suggestions...? [Hoping that you're nodding your head - if not, you don't have to post this part of my comment - I won't be offended]
Anyway, seeing as you have this B&W thing going, perhap try switching out the white frame for a black one[or even a dark metallicy grey that matches the cameras]. You need a touch of contrast between the photo matte and the wall. And replace the black plant urns with a lamp - something in a metal [to match your drawer pulls] and slim, or glass. But with clean Deco-ish lines. Oh, and with a black short barrel or square shade. The *only* colour really *should* be just your gorgeous Baby pic and frame!

;-] Sorry, if I sound like I've just totally rearranged your room! But I'm a diehard "collector" of *stuff* and rabid vignetter. -- As I said, feel free to edit my comments!

  6. Great post! I love the you photographed the process. I like the final one. A lot. A black frame on the wedding photo would be a good touch. Or a gold one.

Love that you included the other variations!

  9. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has difficulty with this!

I usually try about 10 different ways, too. But none of them ever look like the magazine photos do.

    Bah!
    :)

  12. I'm pretty bad at styling decorations and such too so I just take the easy way out and stick to simple and minimalist. Your attempts look pretty good to me, and of course the final product turned out beautiful, so I would say: very good for a first try at this =)
