Fall Foto Fail
Last weekend, I tried to take some photos of Chloe amongst all the fall colours. All the pieces were in place... the sun was shining, HandyMan raked up a big pile of leaves for us, I took out the red chair to use as a prop, and Chloe was happy to wear her favourite polka dot sweater. I had visions of coming out with vibrant, happy photos that I could use for our holiday cards. Great plan, right?
Right. But someone should have told the 18-month old that getting these photos would actually require her to sit still. She didn't get the memo so here's the photos I got:
Sigh. I was at first a bit disappointed in these photos (we have so few sunny cloudless rainless days here in the fall so a reshoot is iffy!) but then I came across this post from Under The Sycamore and I realized something I hadn't seen before - these photos, while not perfect, truly capture "Chloe". Chloe is a busy busy busy bee. She is always running about, touching things, examining things, poking, prodding, shaking, throwing things. She never sits still. She thinks she is superwoman and will lift and push heavy objects. She is curious and fearless. A ball of energy and determination, all in a tiny 30", 20lbs package.
And I should celebrate that. Thanks ashleyann, for reminding me to take another peek through the lens and look for the true picture.

These are adorable! I like action shots better anyway ;) Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI just took photos of a friends 18 mo. old and I can't tell you how many of the pictures were of him running the opposite direction. Probably the hardest age to photograph. You did a great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! Sophie and her should get together - sounds like they are two peas in a pod. I often joke that Sophie's favorite place is anywhere but where she is. Thanks for reminding me that photos capture the trueness of their subject and don't need to be textbook perfect to tell a wonderful story.
ReplyDeleteI think these are awesome!
ReplyDeleteThose are so adorable, I love this , it really captures her beautifully
ReplyDeleteThey are vibrant happy pictures. Wouldn't you rather that Chloe wanted to run around and be interested in everything ... than sit and pose on a chair?
ReplyDeleteCUTE pictures.
These are the kind of pictures I love the most and the ones you well find yourself cherishing the most layer because you will always remember the experience of the day and her personality at this age
ReplyDeleteWell done for snapping away and the red chair is still an excellent prop!
These are so much better than a posed still shot. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI think these pictures are adorable!! Especially the one where she's trying to rake with a rake half her size... too cute.
ReplyDeleteOH I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These pics are perfect! I like the ones were she is running and kicking the leaves or throwing the leaves in the air the best.
ReplyDeleteI think the photos are adorable!
ReplyDeleteaawww! The photos are fantastik! So fun!
ReplyDeletetotally sweet! Nice to see a Mum appreciating her children so completely..
ReplyDeleteI love that you were able to capture her 1 1/2 year old-ness!
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! I love the action shots!
ReplyDeleteThese are so sweet and definitely capture the essence of a almost 2 year old!
ReplyDeleteI love the one in the series of just the chair... Chloe long gone, haha! adorable.
I love how they turned out!! Great post card pics!! my nickname as a child was "rambo" if it helps ;)
ReplyDeleteChloe is just too cute!! and honestly the best pictures are the ones where each child is in their own element doing what they love! :)
I love how they turned out Jen! And I love the wording you used for the cards - so adorable...and true!
ReplyDeleteThese are SO cute - I love the look on her face when she is trying to lift the chair. Classic. And having my little guy just turn 3, I do find that it is all the little things that used to drive me around the bend that I miss when suddenly he no longer does them. :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these photos. They capture her as she is!! =) I can so relate to photos not going how you plan. I'm waiting for a sunny day to try round 2 of our fall shoot. haha!
ReplyDeleteSuch personality! I love all of the shots together.
ReplyDeleteAll great photos! I tried last week to get a picture of my boys... not a chance they would both look and smile at the same time!!! Tt was fun trying though! here's just a few of my attempts -

Jeran - good to know that this is the hardest age and photographing can only get easier, ha!
ReplyDeletechocolatenbubbly - "favourite place is anywhere but where she is" - love that! I might have to steal that phrase from you ;)
Sharon - you are absolutely right. Curious is more fun than calm (though it also more tiring for mama)!
christine - I like the empty chair shot too :)
Shannon - isn't it? These kids definitely have an opinion at this age.
Lizinka - I'm sure I'll miss this age too. Though she'll probably be driving me batty with something else by that time!
aww, she's such a cutie!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the spontaneity of these shots. Action shots are always so much more interesting to look at. I would send the card out just as you designed it with the same text. Just add Merry Christmas. Done and Done, and the best card of the season for sure.
ReplyDeleteShe looks so determined! I think these are great shots and you will look back and laugh at them later on too!
ReplyDeleteThose photos are so much better than the "sit and smile for the camera" type of shots. I love them - they capture the innocence and happiness of your daughter enjoying nature :) Too cute!

love the pics! and you are so right, you have captured her essence and spirit! beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so true.. meaning you captured your daughter as she is and that's what magical about the photos. my wee boys are the same.. constantly moving and exporing. i love how you arranged the photos and added writing.
ReplyDeleteThese photos are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you realized that the photos are perfect as they are. I realized the same thing about our little one when I was doing her monthly birthday shots during her first year. She stopped being still for them when she became mobile, and that was perfectly fine with me. Those shots were all the more charming, and will always remind me of how she was growing and changing.

i adore these photos--and i think they absolutely capture her little personality! the action/candid shots are always the best!
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the other comments...these are a perfect reflection of that age. Gorgeously fun photos!
ReplyDeleteI love how you captured who Chloe really is. I really get a sense of the little person she is. Just like in the video of her at the mall. So independent. It reminds me of the 200+ photos I took of Olivia in her baptism dress in order to get the "perfect" shot.
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Lisa
Beautiful shots! And I love how you put it all together on the card. I would love to receive a card like that....it says so much more than a posed shot. She is such a cutie!
ReplyDeleteThey do all look fabulous Jennifer! The one of her back walking into the leaves in beautiful! She's such a tiny little sweet girl - I think you got some excellent one's to use for holiday cards!
