Old School Finds

by - Thursday, February 10, 2011

I thought I'd do another little vignette on my sideboard and show you our finds from Antique Avenue...

I have been on the lookout for an old school map for the longest time. They're hard to come by, and the ones I have seen have been in the $150-250 range. As soon as we got to the store, we asked if they had one. And they did! And it was a map of Canada! And... it was only $30!!! YES. Best vintage score to date :) It says copyright 1961. Aside from the staining down one edge, its in great condition. Oh, and it has a more detailed map on the back! It'll look great in the play room.

I also got the little honey tin ($8). I love the colours on it. Eventually I want to put it in the craft area and fill it with Chloe's paintbrushes. It looks good paired with the tin toy carousel I picked up in New York and a tin that once contained Dutch stroopwafels (sooooo yummy). I picked the lamp up at HomeSense for Chloe's big girl room. I want to eat the pretty milk glass base right up.

This little quartet came home with us too ($10). Unfortunately, Papa Pig rolled out of the bag and they were forgotten in the car on a very cold night. The temperature change was too much for them to take because their wood has cracked and the paint is starting to chip off. Only baby pig escaped unharmed. Sad but I might have to toss this little swine family out.

Lots of good finds at that store. I just hope prices don't rise now that I've blogged about them, lol!

Oh, and stroopwafels?! Every time my Dutch cousins come for a visit, I ask for stroopwafels! I've seen them in stores here on occasion but it's just not the same.

  12. I'm in love with your map and it's Canada to boot! I would definitely not throw out the little piggies - they've got a little extra character now! If I wasn't in Ireland right now, I'd be booking it to Hamilton! :)

  13. Why on earth would you throw out the piggies??? I thought the whole reason for buying vintage/antique stuff was for the patina they developed with age!

And if you REALLY don't want them, I'll give them a good home!

I've got that same honey tin, only larger - I love those colours together!

  15. Kat - I wish I could but the paint is literally popping off now. They've been sitting on the sideboard untouched and about 40% of the paint has fallen off by itself. Mama pig no longer has a face :( . I don't want Chloe playing with paint chips or injuring herself on the cracked wood so unfortunately, they'll have to go soon.

  21. Oh. My. God. I work 15 minutes from there and I've been meaning to go and a little piece of me just died, knowing that I could have had that map before you. FOR THIRTY DOLLARS!

I'm gonna go wallow in my bed for the rest of the weekend now, in a deep depression.

Or maybe I'll convince my boyfriend we have to go to the store.

  23. Phoenix - I haven't seen any stroopwafels here. Must find me some Dutch cousins :)

Hopeless Chest - they had another map, one of Africa that you still might be able to scoop up. And just think, since you're close you get to visit more frequently than us east-enders.

  24. Love the map! So bright and colorful. In particular, the red at the top (with the purveyor's info) really makes it pop.

  25. Hey Jen! Great finds I had heard about this collection/ store on our local Niagara news station. I'm planning a trip soon, thanks for the "tour".

What do you think about setting up a Cdn Design Bloggers lunch & shop day there? I think it would be a lot of fun!

I dropped in there on Sunday. It was less than I expected; certainly much smaller. Lots of, dare I say, low end nostalgia and not too much in terms of higher value antiques. Hopefully there's more and better stuff behind the curtain. Unfortunately as well, there used to be another antique store just south and on the other side of the road that is gone, and another one to the south and same side of the road, that has closing down signs in the window.
