Style At Home & A Giveaway!

by - Monday, January 09, 2012

When I started writing this blog, I never thought it would land our home in the pages of my favourite magazine. But it has. Our feature in Style At Home Magazine has hit the newsstands!

Our article is "Starting From Scratch: The story of one creative couple and their adventures in transforming their house into a home." Fun! It has been an adventure, one that I've enjoyed chronicling over the last 4.5 years on this blog.

I loved seeing our house through someone else's eyes. It made me appreciate how far we've come. The article mentions that our house was a sea of pink carpet when we bought it. And it was but we fell in love with it anyway. I mean, how could any DIYer not fall in love with this:

So thanks to you all who have followed our journey so far. We appreciate your comments, helpful tips, and commiseration with our renovating frustrations. Whether you've been reading us for a while and remember that pink carpet, or are a new reader who just popped in, we love having you over.

***

If you'd like to check out the magazine yourself, you're in luck, because I have a whole year's worth to give away!

Giveaway: The winner will win a one year digital subscription to Style At Home magazine.

To Enter: Leave a comment telling me what you love most about your home.

Rules: The contest is open internationally. Winner must have a working email address. You have until Thursday, Jan.12th to enter. I'll select a winner and announce it on Jan.13th. Good luck!

  5. What I love most about my home is how perfect it is for me, without my even realizing it.

Recently my neighbors razed their home and built a new one. Watching this process unfold, I've been thinking about what kind of house I would build if I could. My mind has gotten stuck on my college roommate's childhood home. For quite a while I turned that house around in my head, itemizing its qualities and why I liked them.

Then suddenly it struck me: my own home has many of those same qualities! I guess it is hard to see because most of the time it is littered with the detritus of a packrat husband, 2 school-aged boys, and a dog. But underneath all the clutter...My dream house!

Congratulations on the S@H feature, Jen!!  I was literally thumbing through the magazine right before I read your blog posting and when I went past the opening page of the spread, I was like "Wait a minute!  I KNOW that living room!"  They did a lovely job photographing it but they had excellent material to work with :)  Congrats again!

Congrats on the feature in Style at Home.

What make my house special is that I get to share with my Hubby and our 4 year old King Charles Spaniel, I also live a 5 min walk from my parents which is great as my father is a contractor and it come in handy. As to our home is never done when you love design as much as I do, things always change and furnitures are always being moved.

Cant wait for the magazine to arrive at my door.

The one thing we love about our home: when our son says " let's play a family hockey game!"  His room is big enough to house all of the furniture and room for a full family hockey game.  I believe he feels that his room is really home, full of family memories.  That is what we love the most about our home.

Hi!  I discovered your blog through the article in StyleatHome.  Congrats on the feature and all the wonderful things you've done with your home.
I just moved into my downtown condo a few months ago.  What I love the most is the view I have of St. Michael's cathedral (one of the oldest churches in the city) and hearing the church bells play.  So charming to see a building with so much character amongst all of the modern buildings of downtown Toronto :)

What I love most about my home is how it was a neutral palette for us to do what we liked to. Much like yourselves (though on a lesser scale) we're slowly but surely, making it our own. How could I not love an extension of us? :)

My favourite thing about my home? Probably my bedroom on a Saturday morning. Or the living room after our projects have hit it and there's sawdust and scraps of fabrics EVERYwhere. It's an amazing place of rest AND productivity - our happy place. :)

I love our backyard. We live on a major road right downtown, close to the subway, train tracks and the other noises and hustle and bustle of city life. Our backyard however is an urban retreat. I can sit with a book and a latte, hear the birds chirping and forget the world exists. My whole home is my paradise, but my yard is where I can truly escape. :)

Congratulations on your article in Style at Home.  Your home has been transformed - I have been an avid reader of your blog for many months now.
Our family has been living in our home for 26 years now - we moved in a month before our youngest was born, so we have many happy memories.  I think my favourite part of the house is the kitchen.  I live in it.  It has not been renovated, but I love the space since we have a large table for our family of 6.  The cooking area is so easy to use.  I also love the view out the window over the sink.  Although all our children have moved out, I remember standing at the sink watching children skating, playing hockey, dreaming on the huge swing and playing in our sandbox.  I love our kitchen.

We have a  small lot (1/2 acre) in the city, but the lay of the land...a hill wraps around our property with a woods at the top...makes it extremely private.  Lots of wildlife, a pond with a waterfall at the base of the hill...we feel like we are very secluded.  But in fact we live on a cul de sac and are just 15 minutes away from work, school, church.

I just bought my home (we don't move in for another 1.5 months) and what i love most is that it gives me the opportunity to dream. Everything is a blank slate that I can make me (when I have the money of course :)

  97. First what I love most about our home is that my husband and I created it together - so it is new for "us".  Structurally, I LOVE the amount of windows we put in, including lots of floor to ceiling - sitting in the living room it feels like we are in the middle of the bush at the edge of the water, and it it totally private.

PS - congrats on all you have accomplished so far, and I am looking forward to what you do to the basement!!!

While our home may not be the most stylish or put together (we've lived in our home for 2 years and still have rooms with no furniture, and we still have holes in the ceiling left behind by the contractor when we first moved in), what I love most is that our home is comfortable.  Everyone that comes over feels "at home" in our house and I love that.
