Clarity

Jan 18, 2013

I took this photo at Chloe's swimming class last week. The viewing area is a floor above the swimming pool and my iphone had a problem focusing across the long distance. But the images spoke to me and I kept them.

I've been feeling a bit blurry myself lately. Do you ever find yourself feeling a little off track? Like you're not quite sure where you took a misstep but you know you need a correction, a bit of realigning? I'm attending Alt Summit next week and that's part of what I'm hoping for - a sharper focus on what I want this blog and my life to be. If you've never been to Alt or any blog conference, I encourage you to go. Last year, I came home invigorated and ready to shake things up. There's something that happens when you're surrounded by other people who understand your speak, who feel passion for your passions. It sparks new fires and makes existing ones burn deeper and brighter. It gives you clarity around your definition of success.

How do you keep your fires burning?

Next week, things will be looking a bit different around here. It's another step towards the clarity I'm seeking. Sometimes you need to let your eyes get all fuzzy so you can focus on what's really important.

Have a great weekend.

There weren't many Canadians last year that I know of but this year, there's at least ten of us. Its a great place to meet others including many shop owners and event planners.

I am actually in the same place, Jennifer...not completely off track, but shifted somehow and not quite where I should be. I took a European vacation at the start of this new year and really appreciated the time away to gain perspective and clarity. I am still feeling a bit fuzzy and muddled, but trusting that things will fall into place in time and with patience ;)

  9. I have decided I need to just become comfortable with being fuzzy.  For ages I was so stressed out about not having a specific direction or destination in my life, but now I am working on being comfortable not knowing what comes next.  It's not always easy! I think Alt is going to be great for you, conferences never fail to get me all jazzed up and raring to go.  I am excited to hear all about it when you get back! :)

  10. I have to say I LOVE that first photo. It reminds me a bit of the paintings by Elizabeth Lennie (who's work I covet).
I'm sorry you're feeling a bit blurry, but i think it comes with the time of year - we get so wrapped up in the holidays that when life returns to 'normal' it feels rather uninspiring.
I hope Alt gives you a better sense of direction. I'd love to go to ALT, but it sold out before I could even log in this year to see how much it cost - oh well - maybe in 2014

I love Elizabeth Lennie's work! It just screams summer & childhood.

You're right about this period being a 'let down' after the holidays. You put away the decorations and everything just feels different.

I know - Alt tickets went super fast. I'll be sure to remind you next year ;)

  12. Great photos, Jen! Isn't it so awesome to have an iPhone camera always at the ready? My childhood photo album is almost completely limited to photos of birthdays, Christmas and other "special" occasions. The clunky film camera wasn't always at the ready to capture special moments that happen each and every day.

As far as clarity goes, I understand your sentiments since I spend a lot of time feeling unsure about life, about career, about blogging... Recently I blog almost exclusively about my own DIY projects and progress in the new condo. Although that means posts are sporadic, I'm happy with what I'm putting online rather than following an "editorial calendar". Blogging isn't my job, I do it for fun, and so for me it should be just that - fun, without pressure to post. I realize it's different for you and for others whose blogs are aligned with their careers, and that's okay too. We all have to decide what works best for us, for our careers and for our families. Sometimes you just have to work through things, but eventually you'll come out on the other side with a clear vision of how you want to move forward.

All that said, I LOVE your blog!! It's a joy to read and I always look forward to seeing what you're up to. You're an inspiration to go the extra mile (ie. stencil), learn something new (ie. sewing) and don't be afraid to make mistakes (ie. ceiling paint).

Enjoy ALT!! Can't wait to follow along on Twitter and Instagram :-)

Yes, I'm glad to have the camera on hand to capture these everyday moments. Now if I could only do a better job of printing these photos out ;)

Thanks for the encouragement. I don't mind the fuzziness because I know its temporary. Hopefully! I'm glad you're inspired by the blog. Life is too short to be doing the same old boring things every day ;)

Love your honesty Jen and Chloe looks super adorable! I feel the same way but I have a great wallpaper on my laptop that says "I work  because I love this sh*t" that's kinda my motivation everyday. Have an amazing time at ALT, can't wait to hear more about :)
