A Modern Coastal Craft Room Reveal #ProjectCraftsDept

by - Wednesday, May 16, 2018

Find inspiration for storage and organization of your crafting supplies in this basement craft room with coastal style.

Boy oh boy has this renovation taken a looooong time to finish! I first shared our plans for this craft room back in January. I KNOW! But that's real life... projects always take longer than you think they will! The One Room Challenge master bedroom forced this project to be put on the back burner for a few weeks but we've finally finished it off. Come on in! I have a ridiculous amount of photos in this post because I want to share every single detail of this room with you. But first, let's look back at the empty basement room we started with:

It was a complete blank canvas... where to begin? I fully believe everyone should personalize their home and customize their spaces to suit their needs. Others might have made this an office or a workout room, but for our family, a craft room was a necessity.

We started off by considering what worked and didn't work in our last craft room. Then we devised a layout and design plan for our dream craft room. But our budget wasn't quite in line with that dream so made some changes and settled on a design that would combine functionality with high style.

We were thrilled to partner once again with Home Depot Canada on this project. They've helped us transform our homes with projects big and small (this might have been my favourite one) and we knew they would have just what we'd need for this renovation.

Craft Storage and Cabinetry

Storage is important in a craft room and one of our first tasks was to meet with the Home Depot Canada kitchen designer (hi Melanie!) to decide on which cabinets and features would work for our needs. I really trust the experts in these areas.

Melanie helped us maximize our cabinetry from the Thomasville Nouveau Chandler line and ensured we thought of details like would we have room for all of my rolls of wrapping paper and bolts of fabric, and would the cabinetry fit down our narrow basement stairs. Important considerations that could have derailed our project!

The tall and deep cabinet towers allowed for storage of larger items like my sewing machine, Cricut machine, and bins of paint samples. The standard wood look interior and soft-close drawers really make these cabinets feel exquisite. I added a fun little touch to the small drawers which hold my fabric samples on one side of the bench and paint chips on the other side, and lined them with a cheery blue and white gingham shelf liner. I love incorporating little surprises like this around the house!

On the other side of the room, we incorporated even more storage. Having these lower and upper cabinets tucked along this side still allows for traffic flow into the laundry room behind the white door. These cabinets hold all of Chloe's art supplies, my party and entertaining supplies, and some household tools. I've got lots of empty shelves still which is a rare but exciting thing!

Can we talk about how gorgeous these cabinets are? I went with a mix of black and white cabinets paired with brass knobs and cup pulls to really deliver that modern coastal look I was after.  The bright white countertops, Corian in Antarctica, add a crisp and fresh feel. I don't like to clutter the countertops as I like having room for crafting tools and such, so a few breezy blue accents was all I needed.

Craft Room Door

Blue is echoed throughout the room, most notably on our vintage inspired craft room door.

The door is the Lemieux Artisan Collection 144 door from Metrie, painted in Blue Moon Bay by Behr and paired with Broadway lever handles from Schlage Canada. I'm so glad we went with a half lite door; the glass allows light to flow into this windowless room and you feel like you're peering into an old-time workroom. I designed and made the decal myself on my Cricut machine!

Metrie also provided the door trim and the amazing shiplap that lines two walls. You might know that we also used Metrie trim in our living room and more recently in our bedroom, but here in the basement we went with a simpler profile. I do think you should keep your trim consistent on one floor, but it's fine to change it on different floors. The entire basement will eventually have a casual, coastal look so really this room set the design stage for the rest of the basement to follow!

I played up the coastal theme with stripes and plaids on the bench seating. The bench cushion is by Tonic Living. The window pane pillows were hand painted and made by the lovely Hollie Cooper and I'm crazy over them! The little hula girl pillow is a souvenir from our Hawaiian vacation.

DIY Projects

We did squeeze in some DIY projects for this room too. The antique harvest table came with us from our old craft room. It was painted a yellow-green, but I sanded it down and did a whitewash to the top and painted the base in Black by Behr. It feels modern and classic now and I love how the black echoes the black wall sconces and flushmount light.

The framed oars were a simple DIY. I found the oars at a vintage shop and the frames are from Michaels. I spray glued fabric onto the backer board in the shadow box and then just used velcro to attach the oar. An easy and modern update to hanging oars on your wall.

Can we call the floors a DIY too? The floor is Smoked, a beige-taupe Oak laminate from Beaulieu Canada. We used Beaulieu Canada laminate in our last basement and I knew I wanted to use a similar product in this home. It was easy to install, feels soft underfoot, and cleans up really well. I love the beachy, modern feel of this pattern.

And one last DIY to tie in with the light wood floors: the wood floating shelves. Sean made these himself using this tutorial from The Home Depot. Again, I gave them a whitewash finish using a 1/3 white paint to 2/3 water mixture.

Just a few accessories line the shelves: this art print from Minted, milk bottle cap art from our old home, and a miniature metal diver's helmet that Sean picked up in 1979 when he lived in San Francisco on a houseboat for a year! Every room needs something old ;)

And that's the grand tour of this room. I hope you enjoyed it! As pretty as it is, I'm hoping this room gets real messy sometime soon. Drawing, sewing, creating, and spending time as a family... that's really what this room is all about. If you'd like to have a closer look at this space, please enjoy this video tour:

A special thank you to Home Depot Canada, Metrie, Beaulieu Canada and Schlage Canada for partnering on this project. I'm thrilled to be able to showcase their awesome products, show you how I use them in my own home, and hopefully inspire you to do a little renovating of your own.
