Building For Baby

by - Thursday, February 19, 2009

What a difference a week makes :)  We've made great progress on the baby's room.  HandyMan has put in the filler panels to make the wardrobes look like they're built in.  And he built the banquette too!  Now we just have to find some metal mesh to face the front and still allow the warm air from the radiator to flow through.

There's still alot to do... painting and installing the baseboards, installing the closet doors, getting the curtains and bench cushions made.  We're also planning on putting a shelf above the window to hold baskets of toys and such (you can always use more storage in a kid's room!).  And then there's all the fun stuff - hanging artwork, filling the drawers, putting up a mobile and the lighting.  Hope you're liking your new home so far, Baby HandyLuster!  We're loving putting it together for you.

Looks great, guys! Love how you've turned the radiator into a cool window seat. That's one lucky baby!

  3. that looks really good! I have radiators too and really recommend that you add reflective insulation behind the radiator. it works great to push the heat into the room and avoid heating the outside wall. I can't remember what it's called, but it comes in a roll- it's like thick aluminum foil with bubble wrap sandwiched in the middle.

  4. well done!! this looks wonderful! am enjoying watching the progress. xo

  5. That built in is amazing! I can't wait to see the finished product!

I can't believe it is coming together so quickly - it would have taken me YEARS to do what you are doing!

Oh so perfect! I love it, and it's coming together so nicely.

  9. That metal is tough to find , I did find some at a local sheet metal place but never in a home improvement store . They often have catalogues of the different styles , I had to call three or four places before someone had what I was looking for .
Good luck . Or try salvage places .
Looks amazing , lucky baby .

  10. Thanks for the kind comments everyone. We really struggled to get it done quickly but its been fun. We must be nesting :)

Tiny Homestead - thanks for the tip! We'll definitely look into the insulation.

Chris - you're right about that metal. We saw an ugly 2'x3' piece at Home Depot - for $50! So little selection and so expensive. Good idea about salvage places...maybe I'll check into the Restore

Very nice. I love built-ins. Some of our favorite renovating memories were doing the kids nurseries.

  15. It is all coming together so well! I can't wait to see the finished room with baby and all:) I know you must be counting the hours. Oh and the bathroom tiles...Wowzer, they are so fancy and wonderful. I wouldn't ever want to put a wet towel on that pretty floor.

  16. Amazing job - I really love it. It already seems so peaceful!
As for the punched metal that you want for the radiator, they have it at most hardware stores in NYC. Maybe because everyone here has radiators. If you can't find local options that you are psyched about, I'd search online.

Loving the big change in the room! If you are looking for stylish metal grille or mesh for the radiator banquet - try Van Dykes Restorers.

    All the best!
