A Bright White Master Bedroom Renovation
Would you like to see the master bedroom renovation... finally? I am really embarrassed to say this is what the room looked like when we started tearing it apart in December (December!!). *shudder* We barely touched the room for the last three years, choosing instead to live with the previous owner's choice of floral border and bland curtains. Its a wonder we ever got a good night's sleep.
But now that's what we get. Blissful nights of sleep.
This master bedroom renovation has given us a calm and serene sanctuary. Here's the five major changes we made to create a beautiful master bedroom.

1. Improve the Layout
We started out by building out the wall around the bump out. The bump out really limited placement of the bed so we flushed out the wall and created some interest by panelling it in MDF strips and trim.2. Added Lighting
We had potlights installed to highlight the shadows and texture of the wall. Other sources of light include the fab Pottery Barn sconces and my vintage chandelier. At night, the chandelier is like a glowing moon. Chloe loves to look up at it. These multiple light sources add style as well as function.3. Decorated with Intention
The floral motif is repeated throughout the room...on the bedding, the drapery, and the wallpaper top on my vanity. Small touches but they really bring the room together!4. Simplified Furnishings
Because the little one runs around the room, we've had to keep the rest of the decor fairly sparse and child-friendly. Accessories are mostly functional and there aren't too many things she can get into (unless you count the cordless phone and the iPhone charger... what is it with kids and electronics??)5. Paint It White
This is the first white room we've ever had and I must admit we love it. The colour is Benjamin Moore Seapearl, a warm but not too creamy white. It's calming and restful without being stark.
It took a while but we love having this room done, finito, finished, decorated. Done!

um...holy gorgeous! love everything about it~ perfection!
ReplyDeleteWow! It looks wonderful! The paneling on the wall is great!
ReplyDeleteI also really like the fabric that you used for curtains - can I ask where you got it/who it's from?
Yay! I've been patiently awaiting the full reveal and it was worth wait, it looks fantastic!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfection solution for your little "bump" in the wall. I LOVE the paneling! In fact, I LOVE everything! Great job.
Thanks Sharstin!
ReplyDeletejen - the drapery is from Tonic Living. You can read about it on this point (and still use the coupon code mentioned!):

Wow, does that ever look good! I really like how you created a small panel behind each sconce, and i like how you addressed the windows and radiator, by going the full width of the wall and going to the floor with the curtains. A million times better than the before, where the curtains just stop at the bottom of the window. Everything is so well thought out and beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWow! It is so beautiful, yet simple. That is a fabulous combination. Great job.
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFUL!!!!! What a great job! I love the paneling and the lamps, oh and the curtains Love them!!
ReplyDeleteLove everything about it. Great work and definitely worth the wait :)
ReplyDeletelove it, so chic :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Oh, it must feel so good to be done!
ReplyDeleteI also liked that you left in the "reality items" like the clock radio and the phone and the cosmetics on the vanity - I find it so frustrating in magazine stylings and furniture stores that these items are missing - I mean, they are a part of our daily lives, so we should see them as part of the room!
Your panelling is the coolest!

Wow, it is absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteTwo questions:
1. Where did you get your side tables - I love them!
2. Where did you get your lucite stool??
What an incredible transformation! Doesn't even look like it's the same room in the same home! Absolutely stunning - just like every other little corner in your gorgeous home!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful job!! You are so lucky to get to sleep in such a pretty, put-together room every night!

I am obsessed with your light fixtures. Bravo! Great choices!!
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful! I especially like the lumbar pillows on the bed. Did you have them made or did you find them somewhere for purchase?
ReplyDeletechristine - thanks for your patience. I know I made you wait a long long time!
ReplyDeleteroncy vic - short curtains are a pet peeve of mine! Now although we have to 'crumple' the curtains on top of the rad in order to let the warm air circulate, it was still the better option, at least aesthetically.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
ReplyDeleteFilia Arts - I know what you mean. Doesn't everyone have an alarm clock and phone in their bedroom? You never see these things in photos.
ReplyDeleteShannon - the side tables were a one-of-a-kind pair from Moveline Liquidators. But they always have cool stuff - you should definitely check them out! The lucite chair was from the big Umbra sale that happens every December.
LuckyGirl - the long white pillow was purchased at Target about two months ago. The smaller graphic pillow was from etsy seller KitchStitch.
GORGEOUS!! I love it all!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love it! The paneled wall adds so much richness and texture to the room. I really like the floral touches through out the room. Details, details, details! It was worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteSo worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteHere's a virtual high five!
Looks amazing! You must be so happy to have it finished and know at the end of the day you have somewhere you love to lay your head. I think the panelling behind the bed really makes the room. I'm always amazed by the amount of people who are afraid to lose a few inches of wall space but are willing to put up with an unsightly bump out!
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful transformation! the molding on the wall makes such an impact - it's just gorgeous!
ReplyDeletebeyond AMAZING! congrats!
ReplyDeleteLovely !!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a great room! I think the new wall, curtains and lights really make the space!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful room. I really like the white textured wall and those curtains are fabulous.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful master bedroom! It's a great balance of fun, sophistication and calm. You've inspired me to tackle our master bedroom!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love it - your panelling is brilliant.. lots of restful sleeps ahead. May I ask where you found those bedside lights? I'm looking for something similar..
ReplyDeleteIt looks serene and peaceful and ... lovely! Well done.
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome. I too love what you have done with the paneling.
ReplyDeleteThat lighting fixture looks so great in the space as well.

OH MY GOSH!!! SO in love with your bedroom right now. You are inspiring me to get on our redo.
ReplyDeleteWay to go lady, you are amazing!
Gorgeous, Sophisticated yet casual, LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI've been anxiously awaiting this reveal and it didn't disappoint! What an amazing transformation bumping out that wall and adding trim does! I love the color scheme and the touches of floral. I've been desperately trying to find an affordable light fixture similar to your antique (I've had your original post about it saved for who knows how long) but no luck. I'm sure it must be really nice going to bed now after all this time.
ReplyDeletedivine! i seriously need a bedroom makeover fairy too!
ReplyDeleteWow....
ReplyDeleteThat transformation is amazing. The paneled wall is brilliant and as always you have transformed the space with details.
What a great space.
That paneling is perfection. And I don't usually use the word "lovely" but your room is just that - LOVELY!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words everyone! Sorry I had to make you wait so long for the finished room.
ReplyDeleteAnne-Marie - the lights are from Pottery Barn but only available online and had to be shipped to a U.S. address. In GTA, I find Union Lighting and Royal Lighting have good selection.
you're not the only one who takes a while to finish a project. i thought it was just me!? especially when i see other blogs and they have a transformation in a couple of weeks. it takes me forever to ponder and find what i LOVE. we just finished up a big kitchen renovation that i've been blogging about forever.....i'm in love with the 'after'. i love your 'after' also. we are wanting to update the bedroom, but there are so many other projects to be done, who knows when it will get done! ok, sorry to ramble....thumbs up on your project!
ReplyDeleteEverything is beautiful! Love the panelling with the PB lighting and your antique panorama photo. Looking forward to meeting you next week!
ReplyDeleteWOW! It's gorgeous. I'm so impressed with the wall treatment. Absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteSimply stunning!!! congratulations, you must be so pleased.
ReplyDelete{lol - I too have a small toy basket in my room for my boys. entertainment for when I'm in the shower :) }
I love it!! The paneling, the drapes, the chandy.. it's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWell. That was worth the wait. Your bedroom looks AMAZING! I know it was a great deal of hard work and involved careful decision-making, but it just looks effortless. Nicely done! The paneling is simply genius, and all the choices you have made are just beautiful. If it were me, I wouldn't be getting sleep at all, because I'd just want to keep the lights on so I could gaze around at all the loveliness.

You don't ever disappoint! Fabulous, gorgeous, wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteWe just started renovating our home. Wish we were as far along as you. You've done an incredible job. I'll come back to your blog often for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteOh, Wander. I love it. I really do. The whole darn thing. But my favorites are the piece above the bed and all of the lighting. And the fabrics. And the nightstands. And the colors.
ReplyDeleteVery very very nice job.

the room looks so beautiful. if you don't mind what carpet did you use...where's it from if you don't mind?!? it's so pretty. i've never liked carpet much, but as i have more children, i really see the functionality in the bedroom. so much warmer and softer on the feet. i'm also i love with the wall paneling, what a great idea to build it out...and just so classy looking. thanks shauna
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! There is nothing bland or boring about this white room! Lovely :)

ReplyDeleteLonden
I just had to add you shouldn't apologize for "taking so long". In real life these makeovers don't happen overnight! It's encouraging and REALISTIC to see "real-life decorating"! So thank you for that :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I LOVE that pendant!
ReplyDeleteLove the creaminess of the walls and of course the panelling is fab. (love the detail behind the bedside lamps.) What color are the walls--I'm looking for a kitchen cabinet color and this would be perfect! You did a beautiful job--well worth the wait for us! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteoh wow - what an incredible transformation!

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful, beautiful space! You must smile each and every time you step into it, I would :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying your blog for some time now. I am working on drapery for my master bedroom and admire your combination of panels with bamboo blinds. Was wondering if your blinds were lined. I would like to line my blinds for more privacy, but am concerned they may look to bulky when they are pulled up. Many thanks for your lovely blog- excellent reading!
Maria
kathertzler - the walls are Benjamin Moore's Sea Pearl
ReplyDeletemommygirl - Thanks for visiting! No, the blinds aren't lined but the drapes are lined. We tend to keep the blinds up and just close the drapes when we need darkness.
I love your carpet! Do you mind sharing the name and brand? Is it cut and loop?
ReplyDeleteThis room is perfection!! Adding architectural detail to the wall with the MDF moulding is brilliant, and I think I may use that idea in the future. This bedroom is going in the design file. Thanks for sharing, job well done!!
ReplyDeleteHoly WOW! That is one beautiful transformation. Our master had hunter green walls and, wait for it, 2 wallpaper borders. Those are gone but it is still a work in progress. Yours is an inspiration to finish it.
ReplyDeleteAngela - Unfortunately, I have lost the receipt somewhere in the house but will let you know if I find it! Its not a cut and loop; its a cut pile but the fibres are varying thicknesses which I think gives it the look of a cut and loo.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cherish! Thanks Sarah!
This room is amazing and I'm in love with the curtains, pillows, and flower light! Fantastic! I found you via Brooklyn Limestone today. Great job!
ReplyDeleteCan I ask where the dresser came from and/or the brand? I have a white/black and yellow/gray scheme coming together here in our master but we haven't figured out the black furniture yet. I like the silver handle accents on yours.
ReplyDeleteAmanda - thanks for visiting! The dresser was from a local store here in Toronto, UpCountry and is part of their in-house line. My husband bought it 5 years ago so unfortunately I don't think that style is available any longer.
ReplyDeleteThis room is stunning! I am your newest follower! :)
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the bed frame?
ReplyDeleteStunning!!!! Well done...I truly was amazed at the before and after, what a massive change! You are an inspiration to us all and thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMarti - we got the bed frame about 4 years ago from a local (Toronto) shop called UpCountry.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous and relaxing bedroom!! I LOVE the curtains!!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your bamboo blinds? They are just the perfect color and weight!
New follower here. This is so beautiful! The whole room! Where did you get the fabric for the drapes? I loooove it!
ReplyDeleteLove the room. Where did you get the yellow polka dot bin?
ReplyDeleteErin - the bamboo blinds were from RONA.
ReplyDeleteEmily - the fabric is Sweet William Teal from tonlicliving.com They also did the sewing of the drapes for a VERY reasonable price!
Anon - the yellow bin was from HomeSense
