by - Saturday, December 03, 2011

The cute costumes have been hung and the adorable accessories tucked away. And Chloe's DIY Dress Up Closet is finally complete!

You can see the first part of this project, How To Make a Kids Dress Up Closet HERE.

Last we left it, we had removed some drawers, patched the holes, and added a shelf and some trim. I was a horrible blogger and did not take any progress photos of the painting (using leftover paint from our office chairs project) and installation of the wrapping paper (we just used spray glue) so let me know if you have any questions about those steps. This dress up closet for a little girl's bedroom is just what we needed.

Kids Costume Storage Ideas

A dress up closet for kids need not be difficult or expensive. It should have a few things though:

  • The closet should be easy to use. The design should be intuitive so that toddlers and kids can easily understand what goes where
  • Make it colorful and playful! This is your chance to fulfill your pink princess dreams. Use bright paint or wallpaper to accent your closet
  • Keep it safe. For a kids dress up closet, you'll want to use a dresser frame that is heavy and substantial and will stand up to wear and tear. A solid wood dresser like this one is much preferable to a flimsy one made of laminate. If in doubt, make it extra safe by anchoring it to the wall
  • Make sure it operates. If there's drawers, ensure they slide easily and are not too heavy. If there's doors, check to see that they open and shut without too much effort
Making this costume closet out of a wardrobe dresser was easy and economical. And we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Dress up clothes storage never looked so cute!

Dress Up Closet Storage Features

This dress up center has everything a princess needs. There's ample room for dress up clothes storage on the rod, in the drawer, and on the hooks.

Can you believe this project started out looking like this...

On one side of the dresser, we added two rows of hooks for necklaces and bracelets and ties. On the other side, we hung an old mirror we had that we spray painted in a cheery yellow. The drawer was lined with the wrapping paper as well and we replaced the old handle with pretty knobs from Anthropologie.

The wrapping paper was not wide enough to cover the back panel, but since the pattern is busy, you can't even notice the horizontal seams. We already had the shower rod and just cut it down to size and affixed it to the sides of the dresser with shower rod flanges from Home Depot.

We actually bought casters and attached them to the feet in order to make the closet easy to move around. However, we realized that with the casters on, the dresser was more likely to tip over... especially when you have a little monkey around that likes to do this kind of thing...

So we took the casters off because little monkeys like to practice their gymnastics when mom and dad aren't watching ;) We also attached an anti-tip kit to hold the dresser to the wall.

We put this dress up closet in Chloe's room and she has been playing with it non-stop.  Its the perfect spot to store her superhero cape, her red riding hood costume, and all the accessories we had left over from her first birthday party photo booth. I have to admit I love seeing the funny little outfits she's been putting together.

I wish I had one of these kids dress up closets when I was a kid, don't you?
