5 Fall Living Room Decorating Ideas

While I love refreshing my home for the season, fall can feel like a temporary stop before bigger and better (decorating) things happen. Halloween and Thanksgiving will be here before we know it and then everything Christmas takes hold. So when it comes to fall home decorating, I hesitate to go all out. Rather, I decorate for fall by focussing on creating just a few but undeniably sink-in-your seat cozy spots where we can really settle in.
In our home, there's no cozier place than in the living room. Here's our fall living room featuring decorating ideas that you can use to bring a feeling of fall to any space:
1. Bring In Pattern And Colour
While summer is dominated by breezy blues, bright whites, and woven textures, fall is the time to go deep and lush with your fall home decor. Think saturated tones like moss green, browns, and creams. The Arthur pillow, part of my collaboration with Tonic Living, adds richness with its sepia velvet front, plaid piping, and beige linen backing.Don't hesitate to mix patterns. In the image above, I spot 4 different plaids alone! Our buffalo plaid armchair, custom cube ottoman in Goodman Plaid fabric, and windowpane storage ottomans beneath the desk work because of a shared colour palette (blacks and creams) and because they're tempered by solid accessories like the black throw, pillow and ceramic vase.
2. Add Flowers, Plants and Branches
Fall marks the cusp of the changing seasons, when flowers give their last gasp of brilliant beautiful colour before they die away. Celebrate those fall colours by bringing them indoors.To keep things easy, I mix fresh arrangements like this round vase of seasonal flowers on the side table, and a pitcher filled with faux leaves on the mantel. There's real plants scattered about the room too. You can tell which ones they are, because they're dying, ha! I have such a terrible green thumb.
If you've moved your summer plants indoors, make them more interesting by placing them in unique vases or planters. I love how this Pilea (who knew it was such a trendy plant?) looks in this bust vase.
3. Stack Objects and Give Them Prominence
One very simple way to make your old accessories feel new is to stack or elevate them. I find that stacking an object on books or boxes makes you notice the object more. It gives the object height and is a way to keep your objects contained in a small 'zone' so they don't feel too scattered. Here, a collection of seemingly unrelated objects - a small urn, basket, and beads - feel more cohesive when displayed on a stack of books.Books often have lovely spines and covers too so don't be afraid to toss away the dust jacket! Book spines are another great way to bring in colour.
4. Accent with Gold and Brass
From the metal fireplace screen to the vintage framed prints and brass urn lamp, gold hued metals instantly add warmth to our fall living room decor. Not only does the colour remind me of maple trees and golden apples, it has a textural quality that other metals can't quite match.
I have gold accents that live in this room year round (like the writing desk, and glass coffee table) but amping it up and adding in more brass really creates that lived-in feel. Unique items like the brass wreath and the brass eagle on the coffee table, both found at antique stores, create a sense of history and time passing which is what I think of when I think of fall.
5. Give Objects Room To Breathe
Have you heard of the term negative space? It refers to the space around objects. I find decor is most appealing when there is a balance between space that is filled and space that is empty. Each makes you appreciate the other more.
This is especially obvious when you look at objects styled on a bookshelf. I played with these objects or a very very very long time but I think I finally got them arranged just right. There's a calmness and balance in this display which makes you relax just by looking at it.
Rearranging the furniture has a similar effect. The furniture was more spread out in our spring home tour, but for fall, I've created a cozier arrangement. Just bringing the plaid chair in from the corner and tucking the pedestal and bust planter behind it makes the room feel smaller and more conducive to conversation. The chair is also now closer to the fire which is not a bad thing!
