We   originally planned a simple update of the front garden, but with all this time   at home and a desire to get outside, we did a bit of work as well on our back   yard and side garden. We had made   some changes to the exterior over the years, like installing our\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2020\/09\/diy-paver-walkway.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EDIY paver walkway\u003C\/a\u003E,   \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2017\/09\/front-porch-decorating.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Eupdating the porch decor\u003C\/a\u003E, and   \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2017\/08\/improving-curb-appeal-new-garaga-garage.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Echanging the garage door\u003C\/a\u003E, but the landscaping was an intimidating project we were hesitant to tackle. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E  What finally got us over the hurdle was enlisting the help of a professional.   We   \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2021\/05\/one-room-challenge-front-garden-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Econsulted a landscape designer\u003C\/a\u003E  who helped us design a front garden plan. This vignette with the Euonymus   standard, garden rock, and coneflower plant is my favourite. We also\u0026nbsp; transplanted a hosta from the backyard to replace   one that died. Yet again, Mother Nature and our soaker hose system have worked wonders     here.   \u003C\/div\u003E  \u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E  \u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E    The plants are growing wild and tall and here's where I fully admit I'm a     beginner and made mistakes. I should have spaced some of the plants out more     and gave them room to grow. The dahlias and Moonshine yarrow are feeling a     bit cramped, the sweet peas are not the variety I thought they were, and I     think the water may have caused the poppy seeds to pool in a small     area.   \u003C\/div\u003E  \u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E  \u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E    But things are growing, thriving even, so I will find joy in how we     transformed this ugly patch of dirt and rocks into a usuable garden. The four seedlings on the bottom left are not the dwarf variety I wanted.   Oops. On the left side, I've planted zinnia and   poppies, putting the seeds straight into the ground. I've left the bottom left   corner of the plot open for additional zinnia and poppy seeds that I'll plant   in about three weeks.\u0026nbsp; \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E  Succession planning, or having multiple timed plantings, will allow me to have   different flowers blooming throughout the coming weeks. Here in   Toronto, the city owns and is responsible for maintaining trees that grow a   certain distance from the street curb. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E  We were quite excited when the city crew arrived early on Tuesday morning to   trim the tree. They asked us if there were any branches we wanted removed. We   indicated a few that were hanging over the street and over our driveway, but   if they could be mindful of the grass because we had just seeded and watered   it. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E  The crewman went up in the cherry picker and was cutting down the branch when   all of a sudden, the machine struck a leak and hydraulic fluid started   spraying out from the machine. Here I've indicated the path of destruction. Over the next eight weeks, we'll be updating our front garden. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E  We've been transforming the exterior of our home slowly since we moved here   five years ago. The last two weeks have been so gloomy and rainy, adding to the tragic look of our landscaping. I only hope that   the insecticide spray I applied on the weekend is enough to save them! \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E  We've also applied some dirt and grass seed to our lawn. This large area of dirt is where we removed a high spot in our lawn last   summer. Our home sits above the street level and the mound that was here   blocked off some of the view. Maintaining a garden is not something we do well         at... I'd much rather be at the beach. We sit at one corner of a four way     intersection. There is a slope to our property so our house sits above the     street and looks larger than it is. It looks classic with a       garland, white lights, and red plaid bows. I love the pine       trees against this fence. The symmetry is played     up by adorning each of the windows with matching wreaths. Since we sit on a corner, we     decorate the two sides of the house so you have a nice view from either     direction. Here you can see the small trees on the porch.
