It came with the house but within weeks, it started to fail on us.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EFirst the batteries started draining really fast to the point we were changing them almost monthly.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EThen the light up keypad stopped lighting up, though we could still punch in a code.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EThen the keypad stopped working altogether.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EAnd so we were left with a smart lock that didn't work and we were back to using keys to enter the house.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EI didn't like the brass finish and I really disliked how the keypad and entry handle were two different brass tones. The soft grey blue (Wormwood by Sherwin Williams) was nice but I realized it didn't have enough contrast with the grey porch floor.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI wanted a colour that was a bit deeper and richer and settled on Homburg Grey by Sherwin Williams. I colour matched it in a Valspar exterior paint. Having never installed a door lock myself, I was expecting it to be a more difficult DIY project but it wasn't at all! I've followed her methods for years now (even \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2016\/02\/tents-tile-and-magic-of-kids-tidying-up.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EChloe keeps her kid clothes uber organized\u003C\/a\u003E) and one of her major lessons is to gather everything you own into one spot. The idea is that you can't decide which items you want to keep unless you see the whole collection together and then pick and choose those that bring you joy.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESo my first step in linen closet organization was to collect all the linens from around the house: the bedsheets that needed to be put away, down in the laundry room; the hand towels mixed with the kitchen tea towels; the extra blankets sitting in the basement.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI gathered them all in one giant pile\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI roughly folded them and separated them by type and by size\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAnd then I assessed each item in each pile: keep or donate\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBy going through this exercise, I realized I used only half the items I owned. I realized I didn't need six bedding sets for each bed. I discovered I was ready to let go of at least some of the items I kept for sentimental reasons (Chloe's baby blankets x 3!).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI let go of many things and was left with only the items I truly needed or loved. I thought this was super helpful - have you ever been stuck trying to figure out if a fitted sheet is a double or a queen size? By folding and storing your items upright as opposed to lying flat, you're able to visually see what you have. The big benefit of this is that it prevents you from buying more unnecessary items. How many times have you bought something - shampoo, a grey t-shirt, a striped throw - only to discover that you already had something similar, but it was just tucked away sight unseen in the back of a drawer?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhile it might seem onerous to fold everything this way, after three years of living with this method, I can tell you that once you set it up, it's actually very easy to maintain. Using the KonMari method for folding linens, you're only ever reaching into a bin or box and grabbing \u003Cu\u003Eone\u003C\/u\u003E item at time. You're not sifting through dozens of things just to find the one you need. Here, you see what you have immediately. Nothing gets messed up. Nothing is put out of order. In the past I've folded my blankets and laid them on a shelf (like the green quilt on the photo above) or put them in a storage trunk. The problem is blankets, quilts, and\u0026nbsp; comforters are heavy and bulky and pulling them off of a shelf can be awkward. This typical method of storing blankets uses up a lot of room and your blankets never look neat and tidy.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EI was lucky that this linen closet had a built in hanging rod. At the cottage, we store our blankets in the off-season on hangers hanging in our closet. Why not do the same here at home??\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"\u003EStoring blankets on hangers is surprisingly satisfying. The blankets look organized (dare I say chic?) and having them hanging prevents them from getting all wrinkled as well. That necessitated putting the desk on the opposite wall. This layout created a few issues:\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003Ethe side table, bed, and bench felt squeezed against one side of the room\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003Ethe desk created an obstacle when coming in the door\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003Ethe open area in the middle of the room felt under-utilized\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cu\u003EHow do you layout a room?\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/h4\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EWhen considering room layout, identify what pieces of furniture need to be in the room. Start with the biggest piece of furniture and determine the ideal spot for that item first.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EConsider sight lines. Your room should have a focal point that draws your attention. Distract from big, clunky features of the room\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EEnsure there's breathing space and room to move around furnishings. Not everything needs to be pushed up against the walls. Make full use of the space. Think about using vertical wall space as well as floor space.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAlso consider if there are architectural changes you can make which would help the flow of the room. In our old master bedroom, \u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.ramblingrenovators.ca\/2010\/10\/master-bedroom-reveal.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003Ebuilding out a bump out in one wall \u003C\/a\u003Eallowed us to change the furniture layout completely and create a much more efficient and attractive room.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cb\u003E\u003Cu\u003EThe alternatives:\u003C\/u\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EIn this case, we have a bed, side table and desk that are necessary. We have the option of putting the bed in other locations: against either of the dark purple walls, or beneath the window. Having the bed beneath the window doesn't leave enough room between the bed and closet so that option isn't viable. In the last six months, the closet bifold doors fell off of their tracks repeatedly so we removed them altogether. They'll need to be replaced.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EAdditionally, the closet storage could be improved. The shelves are fine but could be more efficient with pull-out drawers. The right hand side is unusable for a shorter child and has a lot of wasted space.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EConsidering the Layout and Function issues together, we have two options. But to decorate a \u003Ci\u003Egood\u003C\/i\u003E room that functions well, works over the long run, \u003Ci\u003Eand\u003C\/i\u003E is beautiful? That takes planning and forethought.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: small;\"\u003EThe first step in decorating a room is deciding which room to decorate.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003EIf we had a giant stockpile of money, this wouldn't even be a consideration and we could do all the rooms. But most of us have limited funds and limited time so we have to pick and choose which projects are a priority. \u003Ci\u003ESo\u0026nbsp;how do you decide? \u003C\/i\u003ERarely do our homes feel 'finished'; there's always a room in need remodelling or updating! Here's four factors to consider before you start decorating.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E1.\u0026nbsp; Need\u003C\/h3\u003EThink about \"need\" in two ways: qualitatively and quantitatively.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cu\u003EQualitative needs\u003C\/u\u003E are emotional needs, those things that you feel. Every inch of your home should be used or enjoyed. Is there a room that you avoid or causes you dread when you enter it? Is there a room that's been neglected? What room do you avoid showing guests when they come for a visit? Your answers might indicate a qualitative need: is there a room whose redesign would bring you greater happiness in your life?\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cu\u003EQuantitative needs\u003C\/u\u003E are those hard and identifiable needs that translate into numbers. For a home, those numbers could refer to your home value (e.g. adding a second bathroom to increase your home's value), expenses (e.g. replacing your windows to save on heating costs), or time (upgrading your kitchen to make it a more functional and better working space).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ETypically, quantitative needs will be more expensive and you'll need to save up before you embark on these projects. You might want to work with a smaller budget and complete a smaller project. Or, you might consider saving up until you have a larger budget and tackle a more intensive project. Both kinds can be equally satisfying. Later in the series, we'll talk about allocating the budget and breaking it down into different elements. But at this stage, it's enough to have a rough idea of how much money you have to work with so you can at least eliminate projects that are completely out of budget.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E3. Timeline\u003C\/h3\u003EIt's not unusual to have your projects determined by a real or perceived timeline. I find that imposing a timeline on your project can help motivate you and push you to achieve more than you thought possible. Welcoming guests over the holidays, rearranging rooms after the kids have gone off to collage... life events have a way of making 'someday' projects an immediate priority!\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E4. Effort and Skill\u003C\/h3\u003ESome projects are easier than others. If you have the knowledge, skills (and tools!) to complete a design project, you're more likely to go ahead and tackle it. However, if its a complicated project, one that is long, multi-phased, and requires expertise you don't possess, you need to find people who have those skills to help you do the job.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EDecorating projects that require simple tasks like painting a room or rearranging furniture can often be done quickly and at little cost. With labels, you can see where things are the moment you open the cabinet door. \u003Cb\u003EI like to use Chalk board markers for labelling\u003C\/b\u003E. I'll either write on a removable chalk label, or directly on the plastic container. Chalkboard markers are what I'd call semi-permanent; they won't rub off if you brush up against the writing but can be wiped off with a wet cloth if you need to re-label the container. For small items that you like to keep handy like paper clips or nails or scissors, use a cutlery or storage tray. Take an inventory of things that are going in the room. Are there large or tall items that need to be stowed away? Make sure you'll have a cabinet that fits! Are there heavy items that need to be accessible? Make It Pretty\u003C\/h3\u003EMy last tip for keeping your craft room or any space organized? Make it pretty! I firmly believe if a room is pretty and makes you happy, you'll want to keep it that way! So, this room was planned not only to be functional but to have a fun, coastal look. Sure I could have chosen plain white cabinet doors. I didn't to have shiplap on the walls. And a basic light overhead would have worked just as well.
