I'm joining dozens of other bloggers today as part of the Seasonal Simplicity Spring DIY Hop hosted by Krista at The Happy Housie and I was determined to come up with a DIY that was stylish and uncomplicated. This Pickup Truck Full of Flowers is just that.

You know the pickup truck with miniature trees in the back that seems to be everyone's favourite Christmas decoration? This is a spring twist on that classic. It's a fun planter for your faux flowers!

I'll walk you through the steps on how to make one of these. It uses simple materials but there is a method to the flower arranging and I'm slowly starting to find my way with that!

Look how pretty it looks on my shelving. I love the impact of this piece. With this as the focal point, you can keep the rest of the decor simple and minimal.

Okay, time to walk you through the steps so you can make your own Pickup Truck Full of Flowers!

You'll need a pickup truck to start. I found mine for about $40 at HomeSense but you can find similar on Wayfair and on Etsy. While these trucks might get pricey, I find its an accessory you can use year round. I plan to fill this with mini pumpkins for fall and back to mini trees next Christmas. You might even consider using one of your children's old toy trucks if it's big enough ;)

HOW TO MAKE A PICKUP TRUCK FULL OF FLOWERS:

Materials:

- Mini pickup truck
- 4 varieties of faux flowers/greenery: 3 leafy branches, 3 green accent branches, 2 colourful branches, 5 colourful flowers

A few notes:

  • I usually buy faux flowers at the dollar store, Michaels, or Ikea. The leafy eucalyptus are from Ikea and the peonies are from Michaels (a bouquet which I've separated into individual flowers)
  • Your colourful branches and flowers should be in the same colour family (pink, in this case)
  • This arrangement was meant to be sitting on a shelf. So, I've arranged the flowers so that they are facing forward. I didn't care what the back looked like as it wouldn't be seen but if you display yours where all four sides are visible, make sure to arrange your flowers accordingly.

Instructions:

1. Take one leafy branch and arrange it so that it is overhanging the end of the truck
2. Layer the two colourful branches on top. Arrange one of the branches so that it overhangs the front side.
3. Add in two green accent branches on top
4. Separate your flowers into two groups (3 heads and two heads). Tuck the three heads behind the cab of the truck. Tuck the two heads closer to the back.
5. Add two leafy branches to the top of the arrangement, behind all the other florals. These branches provide the 'backdrop' and provide structure to keep all the other flowers/greenery facing forward
6. Take your last green accent branch and place it inside the cab of the truck, spilling out of the window

Et voila, you have a colourful and fun faux floral planter. This one is decorated for spring, but it's easy enough to change it out and use different seasonal flowers. I think an autumn one, with burgundy branches and plum flowers and accents of berry branches would be very pretty too.

Now this shelf is done. Time to decorate the rest of the room for spring!
