Cozy Home Decor

Cozy. Is there any other word that best captures the feeling of fall? This week is the Seasonal Simplicity Fall Home Tours and I'm joining my blogger friends in sharing our homes decorated for the season. If you've landed here from Dannyelle's lovely home, welcome! I hope you enjoy this look at my cozy home decor and ideas on how to create a warm feeling for fall.

Let me start by saying that I don't go all out and decorate every room seasonally. Fall feels fleeting here in Toronto and before you know it, it's winter and snow is on the ground. So I've focused on the rooms I want to feel the coziest: the guest bedroom and our living room.

How to make your home cozy? It starts with home decor but I encourage you to incorporate all your senses. Cozy isn't just about the things you touch and see. It's about the crackle of the fire, the acoustic playlist playing in the background, the smell of a woodsy candle nearby.

Cozy Home Decor Ideas

We're still under stay at home orders due to Covid-19 so no guests are staying in our guest bedroom at the moment - except for one. Chloe has deemed this the coziest room in the house so she's chosen to sleep most nights here instead of in the smaller twin bed in her own bedroom. I can't say I blame her. There is something about the layout, decor, and light in this room that makes you want to sink in and stay for a while.  Here's some cozy home decor ideas I've used in this space:

The Guest Bedroom

Let's start with the dreamiest item in this room, the Sven Oversized Throw, courtesy of Pom Pom At Home. A soft, chunky throw, the kind you want to wrap yourself and fall asleep in, is what every room needs. This one is large enough for two and there's no chance of cold toes hanging out! I love the chunky knit. It's dramatic and adds great texture to the bed scape.

Is there such a thing as too many pillows? I love seeing a bed dressed with pillows, even if its a chore to take them all off and put them back on each morning. The Morrison Big Pillow, also from Pom Pom At Home, is a new addition to this room. I love their bedding and the large scale of the pillow really makes a statement in this room. This bed is a Full/Double, if you were curious!

The rest of the pillows are ones I've had for a while. I've gone with a playful and preppy mix of patterns and textures from gingham to stripes, shaggy tasseled pillows and wrinkly linen shams. The mix works as I've stayed in a palette of cream, black, and navy. And no need to iron the linen duvet. The wrinkles are part of the charm and add to that lived-in, cozy feel.

I always love to have a secondary seating area in a bedroom. This green velvet chair, accented by a fun pillow, is just the spot to sit and read. You can make a room feel cozy day or night by adding in lighting. This floor lamp entices you to curl up with a good book and cup of coffee. On a side note, if you're looking for the perfect coffee mug, I highly recommend the Le Creuset Mug in Meringue. It has that balance of weight and smooth finish that feels good in your hand ;)

This x-base ottoman has proven to be a wise choice for this room. It's a large size and provides a handy surface putting up your feet, resting a book, or sitting at the desk. This room has become one of our work from home spaces so I've cleared most everything off the desktop. The botanical prints and the faux fiddle leaf fig bring life and colour to the room - much needed as the trees and plants outside start to wind down.

I've also added this artwork to change up the feel for the season. "New York Harbour, 1852" by Fitz Henry Lane is available as a free download from the National Gallery of Art. I had it printed at Staples and popped it into a frame I already had. Such a fun source for free decor!

Cozy home decor isn't just about objects. It's about using all your senses and evoking memories and feelings too. I've had Chloe's jean jacket hanging on the closet door. Like the plaid wool throw on the hooks, the jacket adds texture and brings to mind crisp fall days and getting back to school. The horse print ties it all together with just a hint of equestrian style.

A Cozy Living Room

I know I show this room entirely too much, but the living room really is the coziest place in our house. When you come into our house, this is the first room you see. Fall vibes start here and permeate the rest of our home.

If there was a definition of "cozy corner" this would be it. You have everything you need to feel warm and comfortable: a comfy armchair (similar), a cushy pillow, a throw, books to read, and lamp light. The dried hydrangeas are so pretty and delicate and bring soft, warm colour. This corner has a quiet, calm appeal that is welcoming.

I've moved the vintage model sailboat that normally sits on this desk and replaced it with plants, plants, and more plants. This window gets the most light (still not enough!) and if these plants have any chance for survival, this is where it's at. I'm still not great at caring for plants but I'm trying! Being at home all this time helps and I've been good at giving these plants a regular misting.

You can always use extra seating. I like having a chair in this corner to sit as you slip on your shoes and fall coat. I've switched up the art above this chair (similar). It's a dramatic modern photograph that juxtaposes against the traditional wall moulding.

Soft greys, creams, and gold colours can be found throughout the space. All of the artwork is vintage or thrifted with off-white mats and gold frames. Keeping the colours consistent helps the room flow. It also provides a quiet backdrop. This is a peaceful room, made for sitting by the fire.

Other than Christmas, I like to decorate with objects that give you that seasonal feeling, without being too literal. There's only a handful of pumpkins in this room and I kind of like it like that!

I like to keep the bookshelf styling clean and simple. There's a bit of warm colour, but most of the accessories are neutral. Natural accents like pinecones, plants, and faux boxwood add subtle energy. Using vintage decor also brings a coziness to the display. The marks and scratches of well-loved objects keeps this display from feeling too perfect or cold.

The long pillow I sewed looks just right on our camel velvet roll arm sofa (similar). Here I've mixed traditional and modern shapes and colours. The darker shades and the plaid fabric pumpkin reflect the colours you see outdoors. I love a crisp white in summer, but in fall, its all about cream, ecru, and linen shades.

And, of course, the easiest way to make your home feel cozy is to have a fire going. This gas fireplace is one of the reasons we bought this home and I continue to love it even more. I like being able to change out the mantel display every season. This one is informal and relaxed - sort of how I feel at the moment!
