Cozy Fall Decorating Ideas

by - Tuesday, September 21, 2021

Tomorrow the start of a new season is upon us. What better way to welcome fall than to warm up our homes for the weeks ahead. It's the Seasonal Simplicity Fall Home Tour week and today I get to invite you in and share my cozy fall decorating ideas. If you've landed here from Inspiration For Moms, welcome! I've got a few spaces to show you.

I don't go overboard with my fall decorating but I do like adding in layers and a few seasonal touches. Let's start at the front entry. The federal mirror and the basket with masks are a constant here, but I've added in a pitcher with lovely flowers.

My cutting garden continues to thrive. It's currently bursting with the last blooms of the season - some dahlias, ageratum, poppies, and zinnias. The colours are so pretty. I love seeing these flowers when I walk through the front door.

There's more plants in the living room. This front window is one of the few spots that gets sunlight throughout the year so I've gathered all my plant babies in this spot.

My faux palm tree fills up one corner and is balanced by the buffalo plaid chair in the opposite corner. I've switched out my textiles for heavier fabrics and darker tones. The brown gold velvet pillow on the chair picks up the tones in the artwork. Those deeper earthy colours work well for an autumn scheme.

I've placed another floral arrangement on the coffee table. This tray holds a few cozy accents like a candle, gourds, and a fabric pumpkin. This brown glass hurricane is new and substantial. I've placed a battery operated candle inside, to add a bit of ambience on quiet evenings.

You can see the brown tones repeated on the mantel and on the shelving. The vintage fall mantel decor gives this room a lived-in, gathered look. Fall always feels like that... slow, familiar, and quiet.

I decorate the bookcases a bit more sparsely at this time of year with just a few accessories in a warmer colour scheme. I removed the toile wallpaper from the backing, to make the room feel subdued and calm. The free Audubon prints bring lightness and a natural accent.

The window seat is always welcoming but even moreso at this time of year. A light throw and pair of pillows create a comfy spot. Having a table nearby invites one to sit down, read, and enjoy a tea by the window.

Let's head upstairs to our principal bedroom.

Just a few simple changes are needed to make this room feel cozier. I've added a faux fern to Sean's bedside table. No matter the time of year, greenery feels right.

Time to bring out the warmer bedding! I've switched our thinner quilt for a thicker duvet. My one bedding trick: use a larger duvet insert to make your duvet look full. Our king insert makes this queen size cover look loftier and not so skimpy.

What colours are you constantly drawn to? The brown, blue, and grey colour scheme is one I always find appealing. I'm also a fan of patterns. The plaid curtains act as a lively neutral. They're balanced by the florals in the pillows and the more delicate pattern of the rug.

Here's more pattern. A pinstripe bench and equestrian paint-by-number style pillow are a lively combination. I'm a fan of stripes in any form and this new striped bag strap on my crossbody bag is a new favourite.

Can you see the houndstooth pattern peeking out from the back of the pillow? Classic menswear patterns are lovely for fall.

The last stop on our fall tour is my home office. Not too much has changed here but I've added a few things to make working in here more comfortable and enjoyable.

A pillow and throws are a must. I need to be warm and cozy when I'm working and these throws will come in handy. One pretty addition is the vase with poppies from my garden. I love how they pick up on the red stripe of the throw.

Speaking of gardens, it's time to start planning next years! I've already picked out some seeds and will try my hand growing them indoors in early spring. But let's not look too far ahead. Fall brings so many lovely things to enjoy.

I hope you've enjoyed this look at my home. Now head over to Grace In My Space for the next stop on the tour.

This week I'm joining some of my talented blogging friends for the Fall Seasonal Simplicity Series. All week long we are sharing our homes decorated for Fall.
