Fall Front Porch Decorating Ideas

by - Wednesday, September 29, 2021

Are you enjoying cooler weather? There's a definite chill in the air these days here in Toronto which makes days sitting out on the porch a welcome treat. I've decorated my porch for the season and am sharing it today along with my blogger friends as part of the Seasonal Simplicity series hosted by Krista at The Happy Housie.

If you're in search of simple and easy fall front porch decorating ideas, come have a look!

Cozy Fall Front Porch Decor

I don't go too crazy with my fall decor, but the porch is one area I enjoy giving a seasonal update. A decorated fall porch can say a lot about you - it can feel cozy and inviting, sparse and modern, or filled with spooky accents and ready for Halloween.

I like my fall porch to look abundant but not too fussy. Here's a few elements I always include in my fall  decor.

Pillows and Throws

Pillows are a must-have for any sort of outdoor seating area. They not only make it comfortable to sit outside, but they help to create a colour story for your decor.

I bought these caramel coloured pillows in a windowpane pattern from Caitlin Wilson years ago. The colour is warm without being too orange, and the plaid pattern is a classic which will never go out of style.

Speaking of classics, a buffalo plaid blanket is a perfect accessory for fall. This black and cream blanket coordinates nicely with the black pillow and the black shutters. Repeating colours in your decor will help make the overall look more cohesive and complete.

Natural Materials

Natural and organic materials like rattan and wicker feel right for summer, but for fall, go for something with a bit more texture and colour. Straw, grass, and wood can bring depth to your fall decor.

Here I've used a straw wreath accented with a simple satin ribbon. The wood lanterns bring height (and yet another hit of black!) to the display.

I've had this vintage-looking crate for a while. The rustic colour and old time font adds another fun element to this scene. Consider adding signage or something graphical to bring interest and contrast with the organic accents.

Pumpkins and Gourds

Can you have a fall porch without pumpkins? I think not! I prefer to stay away from standard orange pumpkins and gourds and use ones in shades of cream, white, yellow, and dark green. These more muted colours are much more my style and help to create a neutral fall display.

Fall Mums and Hydrangeas

When it comes to fall flowers, mums and hydrangeas are my favourites. Just like my neutral pumpkins, I prefer neutral florals in shades of white.

I've placed white mums alongside the bench, and in the urns flanking our front door. The hydrangeas are ones cut from our cottage garden. I only need a few of their big floppy heads to make a statement!
