Indoor Christmas Decoration Ideas

With Thanksgiving a distant memory and less than one month to Christmas, the holiday season is truly upon us. And like many of you, my focus is on decorating my home and bringing a bit of holiday cheer to each nook and cranny.

It's somewhat easy to accomplish your outdoor Christmas decorating - we all probably have limited storage space and tend to use the same outdoor decorations year after year - but Christmas decorating indoors? That's an entirely open and sometimes overwhelming opportunity.

Indoor Christmas Decoration Ideas

It's much easier to come up with indoor Christmas decorating ideas when you have inspiration and today's post is full of just that! From budget decor ideas to styling tips, I'm sharing ideas for the entry, living room, office, and bedroom.

The Seasonal Simplicity Christmas Home Tours hosted by The Happy Housie are happening each day this week and today, I get to share my Christmas home tour. If you've missed Taryn Whiteaker Designs home and the rest of Monday's tours, be sure to check those out too at the links at the bottom of this post!

Christmas Front Entry Decor

Let's start the tour at the front door. Your front entry really sets the tone for the rest of your home so it's a great idea to give this area some attention. In our centre hall plan Colonial style home, the stairs are situated at the front door. I've dressed up this area with a faux magnolia garland and some creative decorations sitting on the stairs.

The great thing about using a faux garland is that you can change up its look every year. Here, you start to get a sense of my color scheme: earthy greens and browns with touches of white and warm metals.

I've affixed the garland to the bannister using garland ties which don't damage the hand rail. I've accessorized it with brown velvet, miniature pine cones, white berry sprays, and hanging metal bells. To add fullness, I've combined with with a faux eucalyptus garland and some real cedar branches. They add a lovely smell as you walk up the stairs!

And can you see my tabletop tree in my blue and white ginger jar? Sitting it on the pedestal just draws you into the dining area. Christmas decorations for the dining room should be pretty but simple and not over done. You don't want anyone tripping on cords around the dining table or knocking over displays with a plate full of food in their hands, ha!

Speaking of tripping, use this next idea with caution! I've added these mercury globes to the bottom step. These glass ornaments have an opening in the bottom so I have a battery operated tea light inside to give them a glow. Wrapped Christmas presents complete the look and add some additional color and pattern. The plaid wrapping paper is from my collection and yes I did coordinate the colours to go with my Christmas ornaments :)

As we turn around you get a peek into the living room. The federal mirror is one I have loving at the front door. A simple vase with blue berry picks and faux branches and a mercury tealight is enough dress up the entryway cabinet.

Christmas Decorating Ideas for Living Room

Nothing says Christmas more than plaid so I love having our custom plaid arm chair to welcome you into this room. This chair is the perfect spot to take in the Christmas lights, the roar of the fire, and just to sit and be cozy.

I've filled our Christmas tree with the coziest accessories. Most of my Christmas décor comes from Canadian Tire - they seriously have the best selection every year! This faux evergreen tree has over 1200 LED lights and almost 10,000 branches so it can be a challenge to make it look full.

What is the Christmas color for 2021?

I'd say it is green. Green has been trending for kitchens and everyone seems to be having a love affair with indoor plants, so it only makes sense that we're craving green color schemes for our indoor Christmas decorations too.

My favourite decorations on my tree are the Christmas balls in different colors like black and green, the reindeer and faux fur ornaments, and the LED candles. The remote control tapers come with a clip-on candle holder so you can use these faux votive candles on your tree branches on a wreath.

Wrapped Christmas gifts are also a great way to bring out that holiday spirit. Its fun to guess and anticipate what is in those boxes! This year, I've used a faux fur blanket as a tree skirt. It contributes to that cozy winter wonderland feeling.

You can embellish your gifts with small ornaments or sprigs of fresh greenery to add that personal touch. Things can get extra busy at this time of year so you might consider wrapping your gifts as you buy them. It's also a good way to keep them away from prying eyes!

Another simple & festive way to make your home feel cozier at Christmas? Just change your seating arrangement. In our traditional home, I tend to keep our living room layout fairly the same, but switching things around can make the room more comfortable for conversation and better for traffic flow.

Having the arm chairs on either side of the fireplace allows us to better interact with others. It also gives me an opportunity to create vignettes and display more of our festive holiday decorations. But things can easily start to look cluttered, so use trays or small tables to keep items contained.

The fireplace mantel complements the Christmas tree nicely. I've kept to the same colours of green and white with fur and natural accents. The gold Christmas wreath with a velvet ribbon adds some sparkle. Simple touches like the velvet ribbon you see around our home bring cohesiveness to the entire look.

Do you spot the desk I've tucked into the corner? It's the perfect place to do some gift wrapping or write a note to Santa! Usually the desk sits under the front window but this is an easy way to keep it in the room yet give it a festive spin.

I've topped the gold coffee table with a woven tray, seasonal coasters, and mercury glass ornaments displayed in a small pot. Mixing textures is a creative way to keep your festive Christmas decorations from feeling too boring. Mix shiny and matte, rustic and soft, smooth and textured for an appealing and interesting look.

Christmas Bookcase Decor

There is no cozier spot in the living room though than the window bench seat. Not much is needed to make this small space feel welcoming.

I really love having this pedestal table and ottomans in this spot. It can be used as a small dining table for one, a games table for the family, or a space to display more festive decorations. You can usually find me here on Christmas morning, sitting with a gifted design book (this one is on my wish list this year!) and enjoying my second cup of coffee.

The bookcases are filled with more indoor Christmas decoration ideas. Bottle brush trees, snowy owls, magnolia branches, and seasonal art convey that white Christmas vibe. Your decor doesn't have to be expensive either.  The trees and pine cones are dollar store finds, the branches were from my yard, and the folded blankets are ones I aready had in my linen closet.

Indoor Christmas Decor Ideas for the Office

Do you decorate your home office for the Christmas season? I just redesigned my office this year so I thought it would be fun to have it looking festive. It goes without saying that I've spent ALOT of time here working from home so it's nice to change things up.

I can't working in a distracting space so I used just a few simple Christmas decoration ideas here. A faux garland hanging around my favourite piece of art feels natural and easy. Repeating the green in other accessories, like the mat in the picture frame and the faux boxwood is enough to bring in a Christmas vibe.

Elegant touches like satin ribbon tied on the sconces and mercury glass ornaments bring a subtle shimmer to the room. Create your own snow globes by displaying bottle brush trees under a cloche. Some of the accessories such as the blue leather bound books and marble box are ones I keep in the office year round. I've just moved them around to give them a fresh look.

I love classic, traditional decor so timeless elements like vintage art, scented candles and greenery displayed in blue and white ginger jars are enough to put me in the holiday spirit. A soft velvet pillow adds texture and brings in enough contrasting colour to ground this airy space.

Indoor Christmas Decor Ideas for the Bedroom

I've got one last space to share with you on today's Christmas home tour: our guest bedroom. This room gets used over the holidays so I like it to feel welcoming, comfortable, and special. I think when you stay over at someone's house, it's nice when the bedroom has special seasonal touches and feels completely different from your room at home, don't you think?

This room has a light and airy look with cool white painted walls, royal blue accents, and a farmhouse style bed. I decided to lean into that cottagey feel and use cozy cabin decor. Be warned - there's lots of plaid in this room :)

The bed sets the tone with it's mix of plaid pillow shams, flannel sheets, a vintage wool blanket, and a ruffled duvet. I want to dive right into this cozy looking bed.

The faux garland and gingham ribbons tied on the bedframe are a cute and simple Christmas decoration. As you can see, I'm not afraid of mixing plaid patterns. An eclectic, gathered look brings a really homey feel to this room.

This room has just enough space for a small arm chair. It's a great piece to have in a guest bedroom. Guests can sit there to relax and unwind and feel like they have their own quiet space in your home. A fun graphic pillow and soft throw keeps this area cozy and fun.

Our houseplants sit on this desk all winter long as this is the only room in our home that gets enough natural light. They're not festive but I think guests will still like this bit of nature in the room. Plus, I'm still questionable at taking care of plants, so if they like it in this sunny spot, I'm not moving them, lol!

A few more wintry accents help complete this space. A tartan scarf, oversized knitted blanket, and old skates bring some whimsy. We're ready to welcome family and friends into our home!

I hope you've enjoyed these indoor Christmas decorating ideas. There's many ways to add joy and decorate your home for the holiday.
