Summer Home Decor Ideas 2022

While I would love to say my entire home has been zhushed and styled for summer, the truth is I still have a laundry room renovation ongoing which means there are giant sink and faucet boxes sitting in the living room, piles of construction materials in the basement, and generally a thin layer of drywall dust (still!) on everything, lol!

So today, I decided to decorate and share two spaces that are on the upper floor of my home and away from the chaos: the guest bedroom and my home office.

You'll find some simple and easy summer home decor ideas in these rooms. Summer decor doesn't need to be obviously seasonal or require buying new items. You can create a sense of lightness and ease using what you already have in interesting ways.

Coastal Guest Bedroom Ideas

A few months ago, we switched some rooms in our home. This room, formerly my daughter's tween bedroom became the guest bedroom and the guest bedroom is now her room. She wanted to move because she didn't like the wallpaper and wanted a room with better natural light.

To be honest, I wasn't a fan of moving the rooms. I LOVED her coastal tween bedroom and thought everything worked perfectly in the space. But sometimes, you just need to move on and realize that homes shift and evolve.

Here's how the room looked as a tween bedroom. See more photos in this post.

And here is the guest bedroom now:

We've kept the main elements the same which allows the guest bedroom to retain that coastal feel. The light blue faux grasscloth wallpaper was the easiest kind of wallpaper to install and really makes a great impact in this room. Paired with the white trimwork and other white walls, the room feels breezy and light. A modern coastal bedroom invokes the feeling of being by the sea. Think shades of blue, white and the colours of sand, seaglass, and sunshine for your coastal bedroom decor.

One new addition is the sandy beige headboard with nailhead trim. I sold our old farmhouse style metal bed and opted for a just a simpleheadboard and adjustable bed frame. This room isn't that big so having a bed that sits lower and one that doesn't have a footboard gives the sense of a bigger space.

The grey end table is a classic piece that works in any room. Nothing says summer more than natural materials like wicker or rattan. I've brought in a woven basket, a textured blue rug, and striped bed linens to bring a summery, coastal feel.

The shelf and peg rail that my husband built offers another styling opportunity. I've dressed it simply with a canvas bag and a hat I designed myself. The dried lavender and horse print are easy to change out each season. The unpainted wooden pegs bring in those natural, organic tones yet again.

Here's the view of the room towards the window. I'm a big fan of symmetry so I've framed the window with an old set of botanical prints from Rainsford Company

Adding botanical art is a great summer home decor idea. It's an effective way to add colour and liveliness and you can find free botanical art or inexpensive prints to suit your bedroom decor. The green in the artwork really works well with the green velvet chair (and the green leaves of the trees outside!).

Speaking of green, what's the easiest way to decorate your summer bedroom? With plants! I'm not great with plants but these ones thrive here in the soft, indirect light. In the winter time, I clip a grow light onto the desk to give the plants a boost.

I hope you enjoyed this look at the summer home decor in the guest bedroom. Now let's take a look next door at my home office. You'll see that it shares a similar colour palette but a slightly more refined and classic style.

Blue and White Home Office

What can I say about this blue home office? It is my happy place in which to work and dream. It's a calm, cozy, and quiet sanctuary which for me, is my ideal work environment.

But it wasn't always this way. The first version of this home office was much more colourful and bohemian. Though I liked the look, and went out of my comfort zone with the sage green paint, it really wasn't my style. Turns out I need something my more serene and neutral to be productive at work.

So we painted the walls White Dove by Benjamin Moore, added in window coverings, art, new lighting, and I made over a dark mahogany desk into a cream & wood beauty. It still remains my favourite furniture DIY project ever.

The blue toile wallpaper and landscape art help this room feel summery all year round so I've added in just a few accessories to enhance that feeling.

Seasonal greenery like the faux florals in a blue and white ginger jar and peonies plucked from my garden are a must for summer. I love florals in general so I was drawn to this floral sticker book. It's a fun way to dress up my daily planner and give my notes a visual, colourful boost.

In the summertime, the tree outside my window grows full of leaves and sadly blocks out much of the sunlight. That leaves my home office in a hazy sort of mood which keeps me focused on the task at hand.

But a mix of task, ambient, and decorative lighting helps from things getting too dark.  The desk lamp gives off a soft hue and its pleated shade diffuses the light beautifully. I also have a pendant light overhead but only use that I'm working late at night or during the dark winter months.

And here you can see the swing arm sconces placed above the wall shelves. They cast a wash of light down the front of the shelves, bringing attention to whatever summer decor items I have on display. Again, I'm not too themey with my accessories. A beach photo, greenery, and classic accessories are enough to indicate warmer weather is here.

I hope you enjoyed my summer home decor tour. Head over to these lovely blogger homes and see their summer decor ideas.
