It's November 1st and just like that, we switch from talking about fall to talking about all things holiday. I don't mind... having to stay at home, there's going to be many more moments to sit, savour, and enjoy the Christmas season. And there will be lots of time to craft! Today, I'm joining 20+ bloggers on the Seasonal Simplicity tour and sharing our DIY holiday craft projects.

I'm sharing this easy 3D Hot Cocoa Sign. Isn't it the cutest? It's super simple to put together and it's a fun excuse to get crafty and make something with your hands. I'm even providing a free printable to get you started.

Truth be told, I only enjoy one or two cups of cocoa each winter but I have a daughter that absolutely loves it. She would have one every day if I let her! Creating a hot chocolate or beverage station is a must for the holidays. It'll be easy to put together those lattes, hot teas, and cocoas if everything is in one handy spot. A sign lets guests know to help themselves - and makes things prettier!

A hot cocoa sign is nothing new but what makes this one extra fun is it's 3D quality.  Polymer clay is something I always seem to have on hand and it was just what I needed for this project. This oven-baked clay is easy to work with and even if your creations don't turn out perfect, they are still cute!

For this sweets and drinks sign, I decided to make mini donuts with icing, and a cup of cocoa with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. I just used my hands to mold and shape the clay until it looked right. The candy canes and ribbon were made by first rolling a red 'tube' and white 'tube', then braiding them together, and then rolling that braid into one long striped tube, and bending it into shape.

To give the sign structure, I mounted the print onto a 7"x9" canvas board I bought at the dollar store. White glue might cause the paper to wrinkle and a glue stick might not be strong enough to hold the paper so I used spray adhesive. My husband used to build architectural models and he swears this is the best product for adhering light weight materials to one another. Be sure to use it in a well-ventilated space and protect the area from overspray.

I've created this hot cocoa station in our basement wet bar. I've been eager to dress this area for the holidays. It's picturesque and the floating shelves are the perfect area to display seasonal artwork and decor.

I have to say this sign turned out even cuter than I thought it would. The 3D clay objects lend a tactile quality and really grab your attention. I've displayed the canvas board on a gold desktop easel (here's a similar one). It adds a little bit of holiday bling.

Ready to make your own 3D Hot Cocoa Sign? You can customize this by making whatever shapes you want, or incorporate your holiday colours.

Materials and Tools:

- Polymer clay in red, white, and brown

Instructions:

  1. Shape the polymer clay into mug and treat shapes.
  2. Bake the clay according to manufacturer instructions. Generally, bake for 15 mins per 1/4" thickness. If some objects are smaller/thinner, remove them from the oven earlier. Set aside to cool.
  3. Print the hot cocoa sign. This PDF has been sized to 7"x9". Print it at actual size on a 8.5"x11" sheet of paper and cut to 7"x9".
  4. Using spray adhesive, adhere the print to the canvas board. Let set for 10 minutes.
  5. Attach the clay shapes to the sign using hot glue. Let set for 10 minutes.
  6. Display sign on desktop easel.
